Show Leslie Norris receives annual faculty award Leslie Norris of Orem, noted Welsh poet and professor of English at Brigham Young University, has received the Phi Kappa Phi Annual Faculty Award for 1987. The $1,000 award was established establish-ed by the BYU chapter of the national honor society to support excellence in scholarly and creative endeavors, as well as to recognize integrity and unselfish contributions to BYU. The citation honoring Norris included in-cluded a quote from a Dictionary of Literary Biography by Thomas Emery: "His lucidity, word play, sheer entertainment, and reasonable, humane appeal set him apart from a literary world heavily preoccupied with self-consciouness, irony, and diminution of the human spirit. It is clear that he has written poems and stories that deserve a place next to some of the best in the English language." Norris joined the BYU faculty nearly five years ago, first teaching as a visiting poet. He grew up in the coal and steel town of Merthyr Tydfil, Tyd-fil, attended the City of Coventry College Col-lege and received the Diploma of Education and Master of Philosophy degrees from the University of Southampton. He was the first poet-in-residence at Eton College and has been the Theodore Roethke Visiting Poet at the University of Washington on three occasions. Norris has won numerous awards, including the Katherine Mansfield Triennial Award for the best short story in English for the years 1978, 1979 and 1980 and the Cholmondely Award--the most I ) Vrrt LESLIE NORRIS prestigious British award for poetry. In addition to hundreds of individual in-dividual poems, stories and essays, he has published more than 20 books. His most recent books include "Selected Poems" (Poetry Wales Press, 1986), a volume of poems for children entitled entitl-ed "Norris's Ark" (1987) and a volume of the Collected Short Stories of Dylan Thomas. Norris has contributed often to The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly and is a member of the Welsh Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He and his wife Kitty have lived in Orem for three years. She also teaches courses in English literature at BYU. Free speaker service through December The Utah Endowment for the Humanities has announced that speakers from its Speakers Bureau will continue to be available through the end of December. Groups setting up fall schedules or holiday programs should contact UEH soon for the best selection. Program sponsors have thirty-two thirty-two topics and twelve speakers to choose from, including a slide presentation on Russian architecture, architec-ture, beliefs about immortality in different dif-ferent religions, Native American art and history, folk tales from southern Utah, and women on the American frontier, among others. There is no cost for using these speakers but local sponsors must make all arrangements and take care of publicity. UEH will pay the speakers. Any non-profit organization organi-zation is eligible, and Cynthia Buckingham, UEH's Associate Director, emphasized that "official non-profit status is not necessary -even a neighborhood study group can use the service." Youth charged with making bomb A crude propane bomb planted outside Canyon View Junior High School was dismantled last Thursday by four officers from the Provo Police Department bomb squad and a student stu-dent at the school was charged. Officers were called to the school at 633 E. 950 N., about 10:30 that morning mor-ning after a suspicious looking bundle was noticed on top of some unused lockers stored inside a fenced enclosure northwest of the school. A 15-year-old male student at the school was arrested in connection with the incident and placed in the Utah County Youth Detention Center. He was charged in juvenile court with constructing a bomb. Police said the youth gave no reason for the bomb. He recently was transferred to Canyon View from outside out-side the county. According to police spokesman Gerald Nielsen, information officer of the Orem Department of Public Safety, Safe-ty, the bomb was constructed of a small propane tank with batteries and a timing device. "The bomb design was feasible but it probably was not sophisticated enough to work," he said. If the bomb had detonated it probably pro-bably would not have caused injuries because of its location. While officers worked on the device, students at the school were detained de-tained inside the classrooms with restricted activity for about 45 minutes, according to Virgil Jacobsen, principal.
