Show Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday September 16, 1987 Page 7 vuugar commentary ra MV Sophomores claim grid win A young Cougar team plans to make it two victories in a row this Saturday evening as they travel to Texas for the second consecutive week, this time playing in Fort Worth against Texas Christian University for the first time ever. ' Last Saturday night in Austin, the Cougars earned a 22-17 win over the Texas Longhorns in their first meeting on the gridiron. In the meanwhile mean-while last week, TCU lost to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, 21-10. Pittsburgh, which defeated BYU 27-17 in the season opener, shocked North Carolina State with a 34-0 victory vic-tory Saturday and jumped up in to polls. TCU lost its opener at Boston College, 38-20. ; The TCU game will be televised live on KSL-TV, Channel 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Utah time. Radio coverage will be provided by KSL radio. KBYU-TV, Channel 11, will rebroadcast the game Monday night at 9 p.m. Although TCU has played football since 1896 and the Cougars only since 1922, the Cougars will be favored because of their win over Texas. Against Southwest Conference schools, BYU is 4-2 with wins over Texas, Southern Methodist, Baylor and Texas A&M and losses to Baylor and Texas Tech. This will be the Horned Frogs first home game of the season as it was last weekend for the Longhorns. The Cougars again plan to be spoilers. A sellout crowd of 46,000 fans will be on hand for the game, with a sizeable number of those rooting for BYU. Judging from the performance against Texas, the Cougars are looking look-ing more like what fans are accustomed ac-customed to seeing. Although their stats weren't that impressive, the Cougs forced eight turnovers, enabling enabl-ing them to capitalize on some good scoring opportunities. It was Texas' second consecutive loss. Two fumbles and a live kickoff not covered by the Frogs helped the AFA to gain the lead. TCU also had trouble with the AFA wishbone attack which produced produc-ed 360 yards rushing. TCU finished the game with 175 rushing and hit nine of 19 passes for 111 yards. The Cadets missed three fieldgoal attempts. In winning their first game of the season, the Cougar offense should have had more points for their effort -especially in the third period. Orem's Bob Jensen went 16 of 35, with 199 yards passing and two touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver Chuck Cutler and tight end Darren Handley each had five catches. One of Chuck's was for a TD. In the NCAA stats this week, the Cougars are 16th in passing offense and eighth in pass interceptions with five. Individually, Rodney Rice is tied for seventh in pass interceptions and Bob Jensen is 29th in total offense. Rice will be sidelined for the next two or three weeks with an elbo in-jury. in-jury. The Tigers are carrying over strength from last year with six seniors, five who played varsity to attend a Athlete of the Week Orem quarterback Ed Chatterly passed for over 260 yards and two touchdowns Friday as well as running runn-ing for two scores, one on an interception, intercep-tion, to earn Athlete of the Week honors. Chatterly is a senior and is first-string quarterback and defensive defen-sive back for the Tigers. The Athlete of the Week will receive a free pizza from Little Caesar's. TROY LONG from a neck injury, while freshman running back Matt Bellini is out with a new injury and is expected back for the New Mexico game. The offensive line was bolstered by the return of Brian Rodoni and John Borgia. Defensively, El Paso native and BYU noseguard Dave Futrell played very well and had one interception, almost running it in for a TD. Safety Troy Long had 10 tackles and an interception. in-terception. History shows that no matter what the season outlook is for these teams, any game between them in almost any sport is sure to be a thriller. View dominated from the onset by physically overpowering the Huskies. Mt. View's offensive and defensive lines were critically effective in carrying car-rying out their duties. The offensive line, with L. T. Dave Thompson, L.G. Max Ahqquin, Center Dave Burke, R.G. Donovan Lott, and R.T. Richard Beardall opened large holes for running run-ning backs Brad Manguma nd Blake Murray, and provided ample protection protec-tion for quarterback Scott Albrect as he completed many passes. Benson's successful extra point kick brought the score to 23-fl with four minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Running back Brad Mangum powered his way up to the 2-yard line on the next carry. Brad took it across the line on the next handoff. Keven Benson's kick brought the final score of the game to 37-0 for the Bruins. The Mt. View sophomores next opponent will be American Fork at American Fork on Thursday at 4 p.m. |
