Kinetic light sculpture aTt -Car n srr4"i-n ft nT i"T-- v -" z m Brigham Young University art professor Peter Myer's kinetic light sculptures seem to move and breathe on their own. At least that's the illusion created by Myer's expressive use of electronically-controlled timers that continually change banks of light trained on his unique art work. An exhibit featuring some of Myer's kinetic light sculptures, along with a collection of 40 pastel drawings, draw-ings, will open Tuesday (Nov. 11) in Gallery 303, Harris Fine Arts Center. A reception with the artist is scheduled for Nov. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the gallery. For more information call 378-2S81. Myer began working with kinetic light sculptures nearly 20 years ago. "It was a major movement in art when I started during the mid-'60s," he said. "It's the kind of art you don't see very often because it must be shown in a darkened space." Bono's your logic. iff- 7 s - m k H i For Myer, an intriguing aspect of exploring this relatively unknown medium is the technological and physical elements involved in creating a light sculpture. Each piece may take anywhere from six months to more than two years to design and complete. to produce the illusion of movement, move-ment, random, cycling pulses of light are gradually turned on and off through the use of solid state timers, i he said. "In a way, it's kind of like wat ching clouds in the sky, a fire in the fireplace, or waves m the ocean. They're always changing. It's absorbing absor-bing to watch." Some of his kinetic light sculptures are on permanent display in Denver, Phoenix and in the Salt Lake City Art Center. His work has been featured in Time magazine. Myer, who teaches figure draw ing at BYU, said many of the pastel drawings featured at the exhibit were chosen because they relate to the kinetic light sculptures. "Pastels are a very immediate medium," he said. "Many of these pastels deal primarily with light as an expressive device. This is a very personal per-sonal exhibit for me. It shows my own aesthetics and awakens the senses. Those who come with a fresh outlook and are ready to respond to the art will really enjoy the show." UBOT seeEis input on canyon The Utah Transportation Commission Com-mission asked that more time be given for public input to a proposed resolution that would prohibit oversize over-size and overweight vehicles in Provo Canyon. The resolution states that special permit vehicles will be prohibited on U.S. 189 between Olmstead at the mouth of Provo Canyon to the Wallsburg Junction. The proposed resolution was filed with Rule Making in August, where it was available for public review and comment. Commissioners were concerned, however, that truckers and others who would be most affected by the change were not aware of the proposal and requested the extension. exten-sion. The resolution will be reconsidered recon-sidered by the Transportation Commission Com-mission when they meet November 21. Eat like a bird? Not likely. Birds eat at least half their own weight in food every day. |
