""T. - ' J i - 1 i t- f Tigers Rally For Impressive Win Over By Cathe Owens The two week old heart-breaker loss to Alta may have helped a tough Orem team to prepare to face the Bingham Miners last Friday. The Tigers, who have constantly improved improv-ed as the season has progressed hit Bingham hard. After out-playing, but not out-scoring out-scoring an undefeated Alta team, Orem was determined to make its mark. The Tigers hit the scoreboard first in Friday's game with a 32 yard touchdown run by Higley, followed by a Conners PAT. In the second quarter Bingham answered, topping off their drive with a five yard pass into the end zone, but a blocked PAT attempt left Orem in the lead 7-6. Orem High Golfers Lead In Region 2 The Orem High golf team takes the lead in region two, while they turned in a score of 152 Wednesday to take first place. The teams standing after two region tournaments gives Orem a one point lead over Brighton at 309 and 310. West Jordan is at 325 followed by both Alta and Hillcrest at 326. Mt. View is at 348 with American Forkat349. "The win Wednesday was especially great for us," stated Coach Peterson. "The reason being we were lead by sophomore Randy Rhees with a low score of 351. When we can get the help of the younger players, it gives our team as a whole a lot of confidence." Earlier in the week Orem scored their third shut-out of the season Blacksmith Fork Hunting Restricted To Horseback Hunters planning to pursue their quarry in the Mahoganies area of Blacksmith Fork Canyon near Hardware Ranch this year will have to hunt on horseback or on foot. The reason, according to Drew Peterson, area conservation officer with the division of Wildlife Resources, is a road closure implemented by the U.S. Forest Service, Utah Wildlife Resources and private landowners. Jaguars Go Home With Tails Between Their Legs By Eric Myers The MV vs West Jordan Junior Varsity game will go down in history as the biggest blowout of the '86 football season for the MV JV team. The first quarter started as a defensive struggle that was so intense both sides were held scoreless for nearly 7 minutes. With 5:24 left in the 1st quarter a blocked punt gave West Jordan the ball. West Jordan wasted no time in moving the ball by throwing a 40 yard pass that was completed and marked down on the 3 yard line. On the next play the Jaguars did some running and scored from 3 yds. out moving ahead 0-6 with 5:08 in the 1st. MV received the kickoff and within two minutes scored on a pass to Howard Knudsen closing the quarter 7-6. After holding West Jordan for several minutes the Bruins got a break. After receiving a short punt on the 50 yard line MV scored on a pass Waterfowl To Begin The 1986 waterfowl season begins Saturday, October 4. Goose season opener follows on October 11. The noontime duck opener should attract about 30,000 waterfowl hunters to Utah fields and marshes. Waterflow hunting interest has tapered off this year, due in part to flooding conditions around the Great Salt Lake. Several favorite waterfowl hunting areas remain flood by up to .15 feet of salt water. Breeding populations and habitat conditions in Canada have improved since last year. A fall flight greater than last year is expected. The real bright spot in Utah waterfowl hunting is the Canada Goose. Resident goose populations Bingham Miner, On another Miner downfield drive, Bingham stood at fourth and goal inside the Orem five yard line, and the Orem defense held the Miners, and set them back for a loss of yards. The Tigers took control deep in their own territory. After a loss on the first down play, Bradshaw looked to pass on second se-cond and 14. He found Tyler Anderson in the end zone, and completed a 96-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes remaining in' the half. Again the kick was good, and the half ended with the Tigers leading 14-6. Orem received the kickoff to begin the second half of play, but fumbled, and Bingham recovered. Bingham's fingers must not have been warmed up either, and on their opening play a fumble put the ball back into Orem hands. against West Jordan by defeating them 20-0 at the Cascade Golf Course. Coach Peterson sees the team improving each match with a new leader coming forward. "Our test will come next week as we go head-to-head with Brighton in both region tournaments play and match play . Orem hopes to improve on the lead Tuesday when they host the region two tournament at Cascade. "I believe that the home court advantage gives a team at least a five-to-ten-stroke head start. This year has been a good year for all the region two teams, for each team has a number of five golfers and on any one day turn in a very good score," said Peterson. The final region tournament will be (weather permitting) on October 15, also at Glen Dale Golf Course. , The area is restricted as part of the recently approved Wasatch-Cache Wasatch-Cache Forest Plan. This plan calls for closing roads where watershed damage and wildlife problems occur. While the closure may inconvenience some hunters, an improvement in the quality of hunt should offset the inconvenience. Peterson warns that the closure to vehicles will be strictly enforced. going ahead 14-6 with 9:20 left in the half. After that the flood gates broke for both teams. MV scored 2 minutes later, after an interception by Danny Chatterton, on a 20 yard run with Lane Riley carrying the ball into the end zone. West Jordan turned around and scored on a 65 yd pass and then the well went dry for WJ. MV went to Danny Chatterton once and Randy St. John once and MV scored twice, putting M V ahead 34-14. In the second half Danny Chatterton intercepted right at the start to give the Bruins the ball. A pass to Howard Knudsen for a touchdown put MV out of reach 41-14. The defense again came into play and shut down the Jaguar offense completely. There were many outstanding plays, especially that of Les Moyes, a senior backup linebacker who blocked a possible touchdown pass. The half ended 41-14 for MV sending the Jaguars home with their tail between their legs. Hunting ctober 4 have increased in recent years, and northern breeding areas have produced more young birds. The fall flight should be similar to or higher than last year. Before going hunting, waterfowl hunters need to read the waterflow proclaimation, available at division' offices and most licenses agents around the state. The daily bag limit is five ducks: only four can be mallards, with one hen ; only four can be pintails, with one hen; two redheads andor convasbacks in the aggregate. The Canada goose limit remains at two, one in some areas. Utah waterfowl hunters must hav both a state and federal duck stamp in their possession while hunting, steel shot zones in Box Elder, Weber and Davis counties will be enforced. h The Tigers took the ball all the way from their own 34 to cap off an 11-play drive with a one-yard Higley touchdown. The PAT rounded the score up to 21-6, a healthy lead for the , Tigers. Bingham took the ball on the kick-off, but couldn't hold onto it against the tight Orem defense. Ed Chatterly snagged a Bingham pass just moments after the previous Orem score, to put the Tigers at first and ten on the Miner 25. Todd Gray took a six-yard Bradshaw pass into the end zone for yet another Tiger score to rack up 28 points for Orem. Bingham continued to struggle against the Orem defense, and still in the third quarter of play, Orem's Vic Cram stole a Bingham pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, topping off the game score at 35-6. Orem held the Miners scoreless for the second half to end with an impressive im-pressive lead. The Tiger record now stands at 2-2 in Region Two play, and they hope to pull a lead in Friday's Homecoming game against West Jordan. Jor-dan. The West Jordan Jaguars fell prey to Bruin defense last week in Mountain View's 30-8 stomp. Perhaps the slight charge has decreased that deman. Those ansious for a large poster should get them within the next two weeks. Bluegills Come To i Utah Utah Division of Wildlife Resources workers recently stocked 300,000 bluegill in Utah Lake, part of a shipment of 630,000 fish trucked to Utah from Gavins Point Federal Fish Hatchery in South Dakota. The fish arrived in Salt Lake City in excellent condition early on September 19 after an 18-hour nonstop drive. The fish were donated to Utah by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Division of Wildlife Resources provided a hatchery truck and fuel for the trip, and the Utah Bass Federation donated money to pay for food and lodging for the two drivers. SDATo Sponsor Seminar On Book Of Revelations Provo Seventh-day Adventists will sponsor a seminar discussing the Book of Revelation, beginning -October 3, at 7 p.m. in the Business Building on the Orem campus of Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem. The seminar will be held three nights a week for eight weeks and will include lectures, discussions, audiovisual audio-visual presentations and handout materials. There will be no charge for the public, which is open to the general public. For further information about the seminar please call the Provo Seventh-day Adventist Church at 374-2978. v L- Mountain View linebacker Drew Allsup (-30) stops Hillcrest's Pete Hoyne (-44 with ball) for short yardage as Chris Jolley (-24) comes to his aid. Jolley scored the first TD of the game for the Bruins. Sour Homecoming For Jaguars By Eric Myers West Jordan had a sour homecoming game Friday. The fianl score was 30-8 leaving the Jaguars nothing to celebrate at homecoming. In the first quarter the Bruins struck quickly with a field goal by Truman Child and then a 35 yd. touchdown run by Kyle Roberts, to move ahead 10-0. After the two scores by the Bruins both teams settled into a defensive battle that lasted throughout the remainder of the half. Elk Munt This year's elk hunt could be the best ever. According to Grant Jense, big game coordinator for the Division fo Wildlife Resources, this season should be as good or better than last , year's record of 5,631 elk harvested. There has been a slow, steady increase in distribution and population numbers of elk in Utah for 15 years. Elk in the state numbered close to 35,000 in preseason counts. Off-Road Vehicle Maps Available As Utah hunters head for the hills this season, many will be abroad an all terrain vehicle (ATV). The U.S. Forest Service, which manges much of the popular hunting territory, wants hunters to know that some areas and some lesser-used roads are open to ATV's on each national forest. State law now reads that streets and highways in Utah are closed to ATC use. The new law also allows land management agencies like the Forest Service to open select roads to ATVs. Each forest has a free travel plan map that shows open areas, roads and trails. The maps also show areas and roads closed to motor vehicles to protect wildlife, waterships or public safety. Pick up a Forest Travel Map at the Forest Service office in the area you plan to hunt. Addresses are on page 7 of the Utah Big Game Proclamation. . '7ftmy TTrTrin Cport3 Cera Tcv;!r:3 Auto . . . The Bruins did not let up with the defensive pressure and early in the 4th quarter, Jeff Benson intercepted a pass and turned right around and caught a TC pass on the next play, giving MV a 24-0 lead with 11 :25 in the 4th. Within a minutes MV had again scored on a pass from Courtney Littledike to Jeff Benson to put MV May Be Best Ever Elk hunters now have 20 opening units to choose from for the general season junt and an additional 12 units open on a drawing basis. BY Jay Roberson, DWR Upland Game Program Coordinator Upland game seasons are the longest, and bag limits are the highest of any of Utah's game animals. But, upland game hunters should not look at season lengths and bag limits to determine game population popula-tion numbers. Regulations may be the same this year even though there may be evidence of population increases or decreases. Regulations need not reflect annual fluctuations in numbers of upland game. Bag limits and season lengths are generally of minor importance in determining upland game numbers. Most upland game live no longer than 18 months and compensate for high natural death rates by producing many young. In most years, there is at least a tripling of population size during the reproductive period. It matters little how many are removed by hunters if they would have died due to natural causes anyway. No research has identified a3 V j v. t - i f r i . f V-... All elk herds are growing, so Jense can't predict where the best success will be. He does hint that hunters looking for a big bull should hunt remote areas with abundant cover (rocky canyons and thick forests away from roads). hunting as a limiting factor on upland game species found in Utah under present regulations. Research has shown that as upland game populations decline, hunter pressure declines. Upland game populations are therefore protected from over-harvest over-harvest by this natural law of diminishing dimin-ishing returns to hunters. A basic upland game management manage-ment principle is that hunters can take half of the animals which would normally die without harm to breeding populations. Only when populations reach a lower critical level should hunting seasons be closed. It is the loss in quality and quantity of the habitat which usually causes population numbers to decline to the critical level. Regulations should remain consistent from year to year, because there is no good method of eauatine the pffprt nf harvest regulations on population numbers. The reduction in bag limit by one or a reduction in season length by one day : has no accurate predictable effect on -the proportion of the breeding population saved. -ESI |
