Show Orem-Geneva Times -Tuesday, January 29 1986 r n a . rusiinasior Clyde E. Weeks "Having a wonderful time. Wish ! you were here." is the mesaage on one side of the post card. On the other ! side is a color photo of a beautiful Hawaiian hula girl swaying on the ; beach at Waikiki with the majestic Diamond Head rising in the background. Going to Hawaii in the wintertime is becoming a very popular pastimes for a lot of Orem residents. The local travel agencies are promoting package Hawaiian trips, including air fare, hotel rooms and even car rental on the islands. The prices for winter Hawaiian vacations are very reasonable, and the arrangements are usually first-class. JUST RETURNED Having just returned from a 12-day trip to Hawaii, I can attest to the fact that the month of January is a great time to visit the islands. The weather is just wonderful, and the only on-ly danger is that you might get sunburned sun-burned lying out on the beach too long. Vacationers spend most of their time on the island of Oahu where Waikiki Beach and the Polynesian Cultural Center are the most popular spots. Both of these tourist meccas have changed considerably since I was last in Hawaii 23 years ago. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach, for many years the queen of the islands, is now overshadowed over-shadowed by hundreds of hotels and apartment buildings which are needed need-ed to accommodate the bourgeoning tourist trade. Some of the world's most fabulous shopping centers are centered in Waikiki, offering a wide variety of attractive wares from all over the world. BEAUTIFUL BEACH Fortunately, Waikiki Beach, itself, is still clean and enjoyable, in spite of the crowds which throng the sands during the daylight hours. Watching Wat-ching the sunset in the Pacific Ocean from Waikiki Beach is a sight to warm the memory for years to come V . ' Waikiki is STILL magic:'' ' ' I In the early morning, or the later afternoon and evening, one gets this sense of being on an islawKn the middle mid-dle of a very big ocean. Gazing out to sea and watching the movement of . colors across the sky, one is easily carried back to an earlier era in the life of the islands. i v AY Vacationing in Hawaii last week, Orem Postmaster is seen pictured here with Joan Collins, famous motion picture and television actress, whose 'cut-out' likeness was featured in one of the Waikiki Beach photo shops. Other popular 'cut-out' likenesses include "Magnum, P.I. and President Ronald Reagan. . mn-Gktmia (Bimejs (SEGD411700) Published each Wednesday for $7 per year by the Orem-Geneva Times, 516 South State Street, Orem, Utah 84058 Second Class Postage Paid at Orem, Utah 84057. I I III J j; P8 "ii m c The Polynesian Cultural Center, located adjacent to the Hawaii Campus Cam-pus of Brigham Young University, -has grown and expanded considerably con-siderably since I was there last in 1963. For less than the cost of a dinner din-ner and show in Waikiki you can enjoy en-joy the world-famous extravaganza "This is Polynesia" as part of either a daytime or evening package. Also included in the $36.00 price is an all-you-can-eat feast, colorful canoe pagentry, authentic South Pacific villages, the people of Polynesia, and much, much more. SPEND THE DAY You can spend a whole day at the Polynesian Cultural Center and still not see and experience everything in that fabulous facility. One special thing you will notice is that all the flowers and greenery in the facility are growing and real, unlike the plastic trees and leaves you find at such places as Disneyland. How does one spend a week or two in Hawaii? Certainly, there is plenty to do besides laying out on the beach all day. There is a wide variety varie-ty of activities available, and not all that expensive. The Honolulu Zoo is one of the best ones in the world, and Sea Life Park is a world-famous marine attraction at-traction which captures that same spirit of the sea which since 1964 has been a destination favorite for millions of Hawaii visitors. TOP DINING Needless to say, the selection of restaurants and dining establishments in Hawaii is extensive, exten-sive, with everything from Mac-Donald's Mac-Donald's to the Windows of Hawaii restaurant which is a fabulous eating place located in a revolving tower in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Having Hav-ing lunch at this popular restaurant was a memorable experience, as it turned around twice completely, providing pro-viding a panoramic view of Waikiki. Truly, there is something to whet the interest of everyone in Hawaii. With a rental car you can reach every rjart of the island,' exploring places , most tourists never frequent. And that is only a start. The nearby near-by islands of Kauai, Molikai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii call out to be explored ex-plored and experienced. But we'll save that for our next marvelous adventure and vacation in beautiful Hawaii. ; M i t . t - y v b Quick Loans From $100 to $30,000 -.United Thrift Cr teen A Subsidiary of AMEC, Inc. This office is independent of other IRS functions and was established to assist taxpayers who have already had unsuccessful contacts with IRS. David McDougal, president of Heritage Mountain Resort and Parent To Teacher By Betty Condie President, Utah Education Association Mary nervously twisted a strand of hair with her finger as she read the SAT test problem: ' Cross out the letter after the letter let-ter in the word "pardon" that is in the i same position in the word as it is in the alphabet' ,, , She read it only once. It was confusing, con-fusing, so she guessed and crossed out the letter "a." . The correct answer was "o." Mary is a poor problem solver who did badly on the exam. She skipped skip-ped over important information, guessed at answers, failed to check her answers. Mary needs to improve her "critical thinking" skills - and she can. "Critical thinking" is simply the ability to carry on an internal, silent dialogue when reading or listening to something. It is raising questions, breaking up a complex idea into smaller pieces, drawing on prior knowledge, converting complicated ideas into examples. These skills can be taught. ' . Unsuccessful learners can "learn how to learn" so that they have more than rote memory to rely on when doing do-ing academic work. - - One of the most successful ways to teach students to become more systematic in their thinking is to convince con-vince them to think aloud as they work to solve problems. Pair up with your students during homework. As he or she thinks aloud, errors and skipped steps can be identified, iden-tified, and unsystematic thinking can be edited. Doing this will encourage your student - who may not have enough background knowledge to call on, and who may not have much experience in carrying on a dialogue about school subjects.
