Show Hunter Finds Balloon 1500 Miles From Orem Orem-fieneva Times -Wednesday. January 15, 1986 What happened to 629 balloons sent aloft October 9 from Cascade Elementary School, no one knows, but the 1500 mile trip and final resting place of one balloon has come to light. Sirth grader Patty Ferraro, daughter of Jim and Carol Ferraro, was surprised to receive a letter from Ontario, Canada, telling about the discovery of her balloon in about 1000 acres of bush country on Manitoba Island. The letter explained that Michel Jacques was deer hunting in the bush and noticed the small orange object lying on the ground. It still had some air in it, he said, and he placed it in his jacket. He could see a paper inside. Later at home, when he popped the balloon, it blew the paper apart. He and his wife pieced 7fiogC4ner ad sent information about the balloon on the name inside, Patty Ferraro, hoping they had all the pieces and she would receive their response. The couple said Manitoba Island is in Lake Huron next to Georgian Bay. It is 100 miles from Toronto and south of Woodstock. The Jacques live on a farm in Norwich, Ontario and grow tobacco. The project was sponsored by the Cascade PTA. The 630 balloons (one for each student at the school) were filled with helium and the name of each child placed inside. Ironically, Patty wasn't in school the day of the balloon lift but she was happy to be involved in the exciting ending of the project. Tax Time Draws Near If the words "tax time" makes you shudder and faint, now is the time to find a couch because fainting is just around the corner. The first day of January to about the middle of April is the time you have to send the Internal Revenue Service a piece of your mind and of your checkbook. For the next few weeks, we will try to give you some ideas that might just save you some money or explain things that just plain don't make sense. This week's tax clue is to start collecting everything that might be acceptable to figure your tax return. Items you might want to specifically look for could be doctor and hospital bills, medicine, items purchased that were required for your occupation, statements of finance charges, W-2 forms from all employers, interest statements, and the phone number of a good friend who knows about taxes. Even if you haven't received your tax forms, W-2 forms or statements for year-end balances doesn't mean that you can postpone the collection of all the other materials viial to an accurate tax return. Next week we will cover more in-depth in-depth clues for completing a successful tax return. Next Week: What qualifies as a charitable contributions? Canyon Viewpoint Mr. Christensen of Canyon View Jr. High has created a lunchtime activities program at the school that provides fun and excitement during lunchtime. Students now have an alternative to wandering around the halls at lunch. Mr. "C" works hard during both lunch hours sponsoring sports activities for CVJH students. Both boys and girls can come participate and show off their skills and talents in many areas. From baseball to ping pong, there's a wide variety of activities for the students to take part in. Some students enjoy the challenging game of chess and trying to climb Mr. Christensen's chess ladder. How far can the students throw baseballs, softballs, and footballs? And how accurate are those throws? There are both singles and doubles championships to compete for in ping pong activities. And is one volleyball team the best at spiking the ball over the net? Right now, in the Canyon View Boys' Gym, Freethrow and Hotshot competitions are taking place. And the winners can move on to county and state championships. December has been an eventful month for the Canyon View Falcons. The first week alone featured the first school play and the school choirs participating in a Choral Festival. On December 4th, the A Cappella Choir and the two Swing Choirs (the "Footnotes" and the "Celebrations") participated in the annual Alpine School District Choral Festival. The Festival was held at Pleasant Grove Jr. High. Mr. Denkers directed the chorus and Mrs. Christensen did the choreography. Devin Greenhalgh and Stephanie Barth accompanied the chorus. On the sixth, seventh, and ninth of December, Canyon View Jr. High preformed its first play, the musical "Joy."
