Ashton Called To Be Over London Mission Utah Symphony President Wendell J. Ashton has been appointed by the LDS Church to be President of the London, England Mission. Mr. Ashton, who is completing 20 years of service to the Utah Symphony, was also publisher of the DescretNews. Utah Symphony Executive Vice President Stephen W. Swaner said Mr. Ashton's tireless efforts have made the orchestra one of the major classical music forces in North America. "Frankly, an orchestra the caliber of the Utah Symphony should not be possible in a community the size of Salt Lake City," said Mr. Swaner. "That the Utah Symphony is one of the top 12 orchestras in the country is a great tribute to Wendell J. Ashton." "We will undoubtedly feel a great loss with his departure. However, many hours of strategic planning has helped us prepare, knowing the day would eventually come when Wendell would step down." said Mr. Swaner. Orem Professor Co-Authors Book On Salt Lake History Dr. James B. Allen of Orem, a history professor at Brigham Young University, has co-authored and published a history book of Salt Lake City. The book, entitled "Mormons and Gentiles," is the fifth volume in the Western Urban History Series published by Pruett Publishing in Boulder, Colo. He co-authored the book with Dr. Thomas G. Alexander, also a history professor at BYU and director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies. Salt Lake City is unique in many ways such as its organization as a spiritual and religious center for members of the Mormon faith, the author writes. But, they argue, it also has much in common with other cities of the American West - more than many residents realize. It is a planned urban community, like Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Cincinnati; and it is built on a grid pattern similar to most other planned communities. However, its. streets are unusual because they are built wide enough to accommodate 20th-century traff ice. Alexander and Allen have several surprises for long-time Utah Deadline Nears For Energy TaxCredit Taxpayers who invested in solar, wind, or hydro energy systems during 1984 qualify for a credit on their income tax returns to help offset that investment. The credit must first be approved by the Utah Energy Office, an agency of the Department of Natural Resources, which will issue the taxpayer a certified TC-40E tax form to file with the state income tax return. . In order to receive the form' before the April 15 filing deadline, the "1 DR. JAMES B. ALLEN Garn LeBaron Places Third In NJDDT Southern Utah State College sophomores Garn LeBaron of Orem and Ron Messerly of New Castle captured third place honors at the National Junior Division Debate Tournament hosted by Johnson County Community College, Kansas City, Kansas. "When you get this close to a national championship it hurts a little to settle for third place," LeBaron says, "but when you consider that this is the best SUSC has ever done at the NJDDT, some of the hurt goes away." Also representing SUSC at the NJDDT was the team of Kyle Young, Lehi, and Mark Ishii, Orem, both college sophomores. They finished with a 4-4 record, dropping their last decision in a break round. LeBaron is the son of Garn and application for approval must be Barbara LeBaron, 478 East 100 submitted to the Utah Energy Office South, Orem. by April 1. Persons not able to meet the deadline may wish to contact the State Tax Commission to file for an extension or they will face a penalty. State Renewable Resource Engineer Kevin Gillars said, "Applications are coming in at about the same rate as last year. Experience indicates that a two week turn-around is likely for processing." Under the Utah Energy Systems Tax Credit program, a 10 percent tax credit is possible for investment in renewable energy systems. Limits are $1000 for residential applications and $3000 for commercial applications. Coupled with the 40 percent federal renewable energy tax credit, there is a substantial incentive for renewable energy investment," Gillars said. He added that Utah's tax credit law allows a cash remittance from the State Tax Commission if a tax credit exceeds an individual's liability. Application forms can be obtained at the Utah Energy Office, 3 Triad Center, Suite 450, Salt Lake City, or by calling the Utah Energy Office hotline, 538-5410 or 1-800-662- residents. They describe the Salt Lake Valley when the Mormon pioneers first came upon it in July 1847 - not as a barren desert (the common portrayal) but as "clothed with a heavy garment of vegetation. " The professors also say Salt Lake City was never a community in the narrow sense that all ideals and beliefs were shared ; nor was it small, homogeneous or self-sufficient. In the broader sense, however, it was and is a community, since many ideals and "Love of place" are shared by its residents. The 348-page, heavily documented volume covers Salt Lake City history from before the arrival of the pioneers to modern events. It examines both the similarities Salt Lake has shared with other cities and the differences. Allen graduated in 1945 from Logan High School where he was active in drama. He served as a photographer in the Navy and was a missionary to California for the LDS Church. He graduated in history in 1954 from Utah State University where he was an award-winning debater. He received a master's degree in history from BYU in 1956 and a doctoral degree in history from the University of Southern California in 1963. For several years Allen taught in the LDS seminary system before joining the BYU faculty in 1963. He has authored or co-authored six books and has written numerous articles on western history. He is married to Renee Jones and they have five children. Allen has been a state delegate for the Republican Party twice and served at BYU as a bishop twice and on high councils three times. He teaches Sunday School in the Orem 31st Ward. . . 'V "V jT V 74$ South Stat Street 225-2560 J DON'T r.uss IT """ : "A GREAT FAMILY SHOW!" ADVENTUROUS, FUNNY, ENJOY- ABLE AND TOUCHING."
