Show Three special performances on Temple Square will be presented to commemorate the Easter season. The concerts are part of the Temple Square Concert Series, and are sponsored by the Activities Committee Com-mittee of the IDS Church. Saturday, March, 31, 1984: 'The Redeemer,' by Robert Cundick Dr. Ralph Woodward will conduct the oratorio, "The Redeemer, A Sacred Service of Music" at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. Presented by the BYU Music Department and BYU Alumni Salt Lake City Regional Council, the concert will feature the BYU Oratorio Choir, A Cappella Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. Clayne Robison of the BYU music faculty will be the guest artist. Although the concert is free, tickets are required, and may be obtained at all ZCMI ticket outlets, as well as the North Visitors Center on Temple Square. Seating is open and doors open one-half hour before Symphony highlights local cellist The University of Utah Symphony is proud to present international concert cellist Gayle Smith at the Symphony Hall on Thursday evening, April 5, at 8 p.m. with Jason Klein conducting. The program will include Miss Smith performing the Shostakovich Cello Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony. Tickets are available through the box office at Kingsbury Hall on the university campus for $2.50 and $1.50 for students and senior citizens. "The Redeemer" is an oratorio portraying the mission of Christ. Composed by Dr. Robert Cundick, with scriptural text by Dr. Woodward, Wood-ward, it is based upon the Bible and Book of Mormon. Dr. Woodward conceived the idea for the piece as an effort to help explain the viewpoint of the LDS Church towards the Savior. He approached Dr. Cundick, and they completed "The Redeemer" in January. 1978. Its first performance was in March, 1978. Dr. Cundick has earned widespread recognition as a composer and organist. He was appointed to a position as Tabernacle Taber-nacle organist in 1965, is a lecturer in music at the University of Utah, and is a professor of music at BYU. Dr. Woodward is completing his 29th year at BYU. He conducts the Men's Chorus and the A Cappella Choir, and is the creator and artistic ar-tistic director of the Ralph Wood- GAYLE SMITH "uncommon sensitivity" and the New York Times hailed her as a "remarkably fine cellist" after her Lincoln Center debut. Spencer Kinard, narrator "Easter," a cantata with words and music by Janccn Brady, will be performed both Friday and Sunday nights in the Assembly Hall, starting at 7:30 p.m. The work is adapted from the Bible and James E. Talmadge's "Jesus the Christ." J. Spencer Kinard will narrate the work, and Eleanor Kcnnard will direct it. Cheryl Uylting will accompany ac-company on organ, and Matthew Faerber will accompany on piano. Soloists will include Vivien Robison, soprano; Kristie Engar, contralto; Greg Griffiths, tenor; and Gene Larsson, baritone. Saturday, April 21 : Bach's St. John Passion; Utah Bach Choir, Douglas Bush, director "The St. John Passion" will bo performed in German by the Utah Bach Choir at 7:30 on Saturday night in the Assembly Hall. O MOVIE "The Wizard Of Oi" (1939, Fantasy) Judy Garland, Ray Silverstein leads in symphony series The Utah Symphony, led by Joseph Silverstein, will perform in subscription concerts at Symphony Hall at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31. It will also perform in the last New Audience Series concert of the 1983-84 season in Symphony Hall at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 29. Concertmasler Andres Cardenes will solo on Bartok's Violin Concerto, Con-certo, which is considered one of the most difficult of all violin concerti. Also performing with the symphony will be the Utah Chorale. The program will also include Schubert's Overture to "Roseamunde" and Verdi's "Four Sacred Pieces." The Violin Concerto was written by Bela Bartok in 1937 and 1938, and first performed in America by Tussy Spivakovsky and the Cleveland Orchestra in 1943. Mr. Cardenes, a seasoned artist and also a member of an elite group of young violin virtuosos, recently spent several days studying the concerto with his former teacher, the world-renowned violinist Josef Gingold. The top American prize winner in the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Violin competition in Moscow, Mr. Cardenes was also the recipient of the Bronze Medal at the 1980 Sibelius International Competition in Helsinki, Finland. Mr. Cardenes said he was attracted at-tracted to the piece because of its difficulty. The concerto is performed per-formed by very few violinists, W !!!! I Mil! "I love a challenge," said Mr. Cardenes. The proud possessor of a rare Stradivarius violin, Mr. Cardenes said he purchased the 250-year-old instrument because the sound it produces is "unsurpassed." "It's the most favored concert instrument in-strument of world-class solo instrumentalists," in-strumentalists," he said. The Bartok Violin Concerto, said Mr. Cardenes, "is very folksy and also very romantic. It's a cyclic piece. The theme repeats throughout the concerto at various times." The Utah Chorale, the official choral voice of the Utah Symphony, will perform with the symphony Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces. Verdi composed the work near the end of his life and it was premiered in Paris in 1898. The Utah Symphony performed the entire music to the opera "Rosamunde" in 1962, but for this performance will perform only the Overture, which the symphony recorded on the Vanguard label. Ticket prices for the Friday and Saturday subscription concerts are: $8, $10, $13, $18, $20 and $50. Tickets prices for the New Audience Concert Con-cert on March 29, which will feature the same program as the subscription sub-scription concerts are: $6 for adults on the second and third tier, $4 for children, and on the main floor and first tier adult tickets are $10 and $6 for children.
