Dr. Bruce H. Woolley says sophisticated data have shown that many generics are equal to brand-name brand-name products. "However, data also shows that many generics do not provide pro-vide adequate therapeutic results." The drug expert says he found while serving on the Drug Specifications Specifica-tions Committee for Los Angeles County that a generic brand of diphenhydramine (an antihistamine for allergies) caused nausea and vomiting in a large number of patients., ,. , ..b-v,.- ...!!. . ;, Ah investigation showed that one of the ingredients used in the manufacturing process caused the nausea. Woolley says bioavailability measurements, which determine how quickly and how much of a drug reaches the site where it's needed, show deficiencies in some generic drugs. "A graph can be plotted showing the concentration of the drug in the bloodstream at various times," he says. "Some generic drugs never reach an effective concentration." Woolley makes the following recommendations: -Be sure to understand the physician's physi-cian's and pharmacist's instructions on how to take the drug and what to expect from it. -If the pharmacist recommends a generic product, ask if he has complete com-plete bioavailability data and if the evaluation of the drug meets all the specifications of the brand-name product. -Most of the better brands of generics have an identification mark on the tablet or capsule called an "identi-code." Usually it's a combination combina-tion of numbers and letters. Don't accept ac-cept any drug unless it bears that marking. -Ask the pharmacist to put an expiration ex-piration date on the label of each prescription filled. -Don't allow anyone but the person per-son named on the label to take the drugs. -Be cautious of the person who wants to discuss only price. Heritage Is Ours To Keep By Tracey Anderson, 13 America is a great place to live because of all its freedoms. In America you have the freedom of speech, you can say anything you want to say. You also have the freedom of religion, and many other freedoms. When they wrote the Constitution, Con-stitution, they wrote it to better our lives. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use. It has grown via amendments, statutes, and court decisions. It has served as an example for other nations including Canada, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, Turkey, India In-dia and many Central and South American countries. It stands for the kind of government that is man's servant and not his master. To make it work, our Constitution needs citizens who are able to understand and willing to protect its basic principles prin-ciples of Freedom and Justice For All. America is known as the Land of Opportunity. Many people moved to America because it offered them a chance to live a better life than they could hope for in the Old World. America offered homeless farmers and others a good job, where they could earn a living and provide for their families. They also came to America, mostly because of religion. In America they could worship God in their own way in their own churches. One by one the colonies started to form the United States of America. I think America is the best place to live. The best way to describe it is by the song, "My Country 'Tis of Thee." "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountain side let freedom ring! " I love America because of all its freedoms. We are lucky people because of the area we live in. America is the greatest!
