Gift of Excellence in Musical Theatre: Janice Perry, "It's a Miracle." ; Nedra Finster Resident of Month Nedra Finster was chosenas resident of the month for March at the Timpanogos Care Center where she has resided for nine and a half years. Nedra was born March 6, 1927 in Genola, Utah. She has three brothers and two sisters. She was married to Kurt Finster arid they have seven children. Nedra has lived all her life in Utah. Hobbies include ceramics, bowling, and she enjoys going for walks. Nedra works in the laundry for two hours a day. She is very friendly and helpful with other residents. Most of the residents refer to her as "Red" because of her red hair. They were pleased with her selection. Public Airs Suggestions On Use Of CDBG Funds Orem-Hesidents had an opportunity op-portunity to offer suggestions for use of $(100,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDI5G) funds to the city council recently. Senior Planner Wally Baird said the CDBG Committee appointed by the council recommended the money be used to promote safety of children, general neighborhoods and the driving public; provide fire education and prevention techniques; eliminate barriers to the handicapped; and restore blighted areas of the city. Baird said this year's grant is more than in previous years and the committee carefully considered the amount available in relation to the HI projects they received for review. Jeanetle Savage, representing a group of citizens present, suggested the money be spent for sidewalks in unsafe areas throughout the city. She said child safety is a great concern to many residents and Orem lacks adequate sidewalks on many well traveled streets. Handall Mehew said 200 E., iK'tween 400 N. and 500 N., is in need of curb and gutter. Also speaking for a group of residents, he said child safety is a concern in their neigh-borhouls, neigh-borhouls, as well. Dan Bishop of the Orem Fire Division suggested some of the money be used to purchase an additional ad-ditional 500 smoke detectors to continue last year's CDBG project which provides 995 low income families with the devices. He pointed out a family of six escaped tragedy during a fire over the Christmas Jarman Retires After 39 Outstanding I T. LeGrand Jarman of Orem was honored for outstanding service to agriculture at the annual meeting of the Federal Land Bank Association of Central Utah held last Wednesday. Jarman is retiring after 39 years of service on the Board of Directors of the Central Utah Association as well as two years on the National Committee as a representative of the Sacramento District where he served as chairman. The plaque presented to Jarman acknowledged his outstanding service to agriculture from 1944 through 1983. LeGrand was elected first to the board of the Central Utah National Farm Loan Association, as it was then called. He served as president of the board several times through the years. Stockholders of the Nome Builders Set "New Home Week" Steve Davies, President of Utah Valley Home Builders Association, has set March 27 through April 2 to coincide with National, State and Central Utah "New Homes Month." Mr. Davies states that there is a major turn-around in number of new homes being planned for construction con-struction this spring. This being made possible by lower interest rates and a backlong of needed new housing. President Davies indicated that he was impressed with Governor Matheson's interest in stimulating new home construction, while Magicians Elect Officers The local assembly, Number 188, of the Society of American Magicians have chosen new officers. They are President Charles O'Berry, Vice President Kerry Summers and Secretary-Treasurer J. Earl Faulkner. if During the reorganization meeting, the membership voted unanimously to sponsor a first time ever magic contest of this type in the State of Utah. This contest will be held on May 21, 1983 and is open to all magicians in the state and surrounding areas. The compeition will be restricted to close-up magic for this contest. There is an entry fee with April 30 as an application deadline. Substantial awards will be given to the first three places in the contest. Following the competition there will be a gigantic magic swap meet. He served as chairman for two years. Jarman also has contributed much to Orem City. He is believed to be the oldest living past mayor having served for four years from January, 1954 to 1958. He also served on the Town Board from 1937 to 1941. His great interest in Orem City continued as he served for 31 years on the Scera Board and was instrumental in establishing the swimming pool, spa, park, picnic shelter and other recreational facilities. He served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce for two years. He also served on the High Council of Orem Stake for 13 years signing the proclamation. Matheson has charged all State agencies, including the Utah Housing Finance Agency, State Building Board and State Division of Health, to cooperate to the fullest with Home Builders. The object is to stimulate home building to meet the growing de'mand of new homes. President Davies states that today is the ideal time to consider building that new home, as builders are available for work, prices of' lots are down and lower interest rates, make it an excellent time to build. Orem Man Official At Orem - The State of Utah may have a representative among event starters at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Mark Farrer, 49, and an Orem native, said prospects looked "very good" for . his selection by the Olympic Committee, until a recent letter suggested all starters may be recruited from Europe. - Farrer said bringing starters in from elsewhere doesn't make $ense. "We have qualified people-probably people-probably better than anywhere else in the world -right here in the USA," Farrer said. Olympic starters must have officiated at several national meets in order to qualify and Farrer said he is the only Utah starter to have donosorile has three national meets to his credit. A former school teacher he taught for three years in Wyoming and one year in Daggett County. Jarman was a state legislator for four years and was lobbyist for the Farm Bureau for 27 years. At present he is serving on the Orem City Heritage Board which was created in 1976. Farrer has been a starter for 18 years and has officiated at WAC Championship meets, many out-of- state meets and he spent two months in California conducting seminars and clinics for other officials. Farrer participated in track and field in the Marine Corps and laterj graduated from BYU. He then coached track at American Fork) High for nine years, where he begara his career as a starter. - He is certified with the National Track Officials Association on a "Masters" level, a requirement foil Olympic officials. Farrer said the committee's letter indicates at least half of the six starters for the games and possibly all of them will come from Europe.
