Fortunately, most bites do little damage-the skin is healed long before the child's faith in the animal is healed. Most animal bites can safely be treated at home. You can judge the depth of a puncture bite by cleaning away any blood, then gently pulling back on the skin about one-quarter inch from the wound on each side. If no new bleeding occurs, and if the wound has a pink color and does not open up, then the bite is either a shallow gouge or a 9.9 Interest Lease Money Available on Lincolns, Mark IVs Continentals Plus Many More Used Cars . . ..$3,495 high rise package, wheels, loaded ...'17,800 USED CARS Tom Sumner Sam Liner " 1 - . In the case of a large deep bite, there will usually be a very dark color, and on pulling on the wound edges, new bleeding occurs or the wound opens to show globules of fat. If this deep bite is on the hands (remember to have even shallow bites on the face or genitals checked) or is longer than about'one-quarter inch on the body, have a physician check it. Bites caused by a sick animal, bats, or small predators such as skunks should be evaluated. If possible, the animal should be apprehended for examination. HOW CAN I PREVENT INFECTION? Infection can be a major problem after a bite, particularly after a cat bite. Cats carry a germ in their mouths which results in infection most of the time if the cat's tooth gets all the way through the skin to the fat. With multiple cat-bites, cat-bites, or deep punctures of the hand, wrist, or fingers, we often start antibiotics right away. For most other bites, however, cleansing of the wound at home and careful watching are sufficient. Clean the bite thoroughly with soap and water. If you like something fancier, use hydrogen peroxide or a cleanser containing benzalkonium chloride. Merthiolate and mer-curchrome mer-curchrome look pretty, but for most uses they don't even kill germs as well as plain old soap, and they have no cleansing action. After cleaning the bite, our goal is to keep it free to drain. Apply an antibiotic ointment (such as Neosporin) to the bite to keep it from drying and crusting over. If allowed to seal up too soon, germs may be trapped in the wound. Cover with a bandage. Feel free to start hot soaks anytime. This promotes drainage and helps the body's white blood cells go after the germs. A good choice is epsom salts, one teaspoon per pint of hot water. Limit the time to about 20 minutes four times daily. Elevate the extremity briefly after soaking, then put on a new bandage. Check the bite at least every twelve hours during the first two days for signs of infection-swelling, infection-swelling, , drainage, - V YOUR NEW CAR PURCHASE 3 YEARS or 50,000 EXILES APPROVED USED CARS 1 YEAR OR 12,000 MILES ... If you see any evidence of infection, see the doctor at once. WHAT ABOUT KABIES OR TETANUS? A bite by a healthy domestic animal has almost no chance of causing rabies, but the animal should be locked up and observed for ten days for signs of illness. All animal bites should be reported to your city or county animal control officer. He will often assist with checking the animal's immunization record or with apprehending ap-prehending the animal and observing it. A tetanus booster is recommended if it has been more than ten years since the last one. Remember that a tetanus booster does not guard against infection, but simply prevents the complication ofietanus or "lockjaw." ARE "PEOPLE BITES" DANGEROUS? A human bite, whether an actual bite or just cutting the knuckle while hitting somebody in the mouth, is prone to a particularly dangerous infection if germs are sealed over in the wound. Because of this, we rarely stitch a human bite even if it is deep and large. Any human bite of the hand which is more than a scrape should be seen by the doctor for treatment, as well as any deep, large bite elsewhere. Dance studios, church auxiliaries, community recreation centers as well as private instructors are all offering of-fering classes at all hours of the day-and night-in this remarkably popular exercise form. But if you're planning on beginning an aerobic dance program or if you're currently involved in-volved in one, you should be aware of the requirements of an effective ef-fective program in order to maximize its physical benefits and minimize health risks. "Aerobic activities are those that you can do at a high enough energy level to have a 'training effect,' and which keep you continuously supplied with enough air so that you can do the activites over a long period of time," says Dr. Phyllis Jacobson, chairman of Brigham Young University's Dance Department and originator of BYU's extensive aerobic dance program. "To achieve a 'training effect,' the activity must be performed per-formed for at least 15 minutes, be repeated every 48 hours, and be vigorous enough to bring the heart ; rate to a 'training zone' that is. based on your age and present physical condition," con-dition," she" explained. "Aerobic dance, is simply taking almost any calisthenics, exercise or dance skill and putting it to music, repeating it at a level that is within the 'training zone' for the individual," says Jacobson. , Once you understand these principles of aerobic training, you should be able to find a class that adequately incorporates them. "Too many aerobic dance programs are directed at people who are already in condition, while some programs overuse certain parts of the body and uderuse other parts," she says. BYU currently offers classes in aerobic dance every hour of the regular school day as well as night classes, but is rarely able to keep up with the demand, according ac-cording to Jacobson, who ssfl Week For SuiilSliSrfesf Katie Harris, a member of the board of directors of the Orem Boosters, producers of the Orem Family Festival each summer, reminds those individuals and groups who are interested in applying for booth space for Saturday, June 19th, that this is the last week in which the application will run in the Orem-Geneva Times. Mrs. Harris reports that applications for space are coming in each day but space is still available as of this issue. She also cautions those individuals and groups who apply for booth space for the Saturday Bazaar, which is an important part of the Summer Festival, that proceeds must be for projects and not for personal gain. It is designed to be released on local and hopefully a national level for public television. Filming of the first program of the series, entitled "Dance for Total Body Fitness," was recently completed and it will be aired sometime during the next few months on KBYU-TV. Lamb, U.S. Department of Agriculture, research animal scientist at Utah State University. Cows generally don't reach peak milk production until age 6. Yet most cows in this country are removed from the herd by the end of their third lactation at age 4. On the other hand, European producers tend to keep older animals and do it profitably, Lamb noted. He said the Europeans annually cull 15 to 20 percent of their cows. In the U.S. the culling rate is 30 to 40 percent. Lamb agreed that in an economical operation poor producing cows at any age or cows that fail to breed have to be culled from the herd. But he disagreed with the idea of replacing all animals from one generation as rapidly as possible with animals from the succeeding generation. FOR SALE 8 foot sleeper with jacks.
