Dairymen Advised To Cope With Cystic Overies Cystic overies per-sent per-sent a problem of delaying the reproductive cycle in some dairy cattle in most Utah herds. For maximum profitability dairy cows must produce a calf about every 12 months. Dr. Wallace R. Taylor, extension dairyman, Utah State University, said the delay in breeding decreases both milk production and profits for the dairy operator. Though the problem is important, USU Extension Ex-tension Veterinarian, Dr. Clell V, Bagley, cautions dairymen and veterinarians not to get over anxious as some do in expecting results too quickly from treatment for this condition. He said, "It usually takes 15 to 30 days for the drugs used in treatment to really have their effect. Re-treating too soon may just be wasting the drug and not doing any more good." When cystic overies are diagnosed, usually during reproductive examinations, he recommends treating then waiting four weeks, checking again and retreating re-treating if necessary. Two drugs are available for treating cystic overies: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) and Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH;. Dr. Bagley suggests using one the first time. That will get of the cystic ovary condition in about 75 percent of the cases. If conditions haven't changed by a month later, use the other drug. Then wait another month to check and if there has been no response, treat twice more in succession within four days. Once the animal has conceived the problem is over for that time.
