RELIGIOUS HERITAGE The statement by the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints on america's RELIGIOUS HERITAGE was read into the Congressional Record Rec-ord this week by Senator Sena-tor Garn. (jam strongly echoed the message of Church leaders opposing attempts at-tempts to eliminate from society the singing of religious re-ligious songs, or the display dis-play of religious mottos. This message reminds us of some basic truths about ourselves that we ought to keep in mind, Garn told his colleagues. It is folly to think that the government can be neutral about religion. To do so is to award the victory to . forces of irreligion, and I cannot believe that that is what the citizens of this country coun-try want." i I1 I ; : ' ft if t i fti?$te T-OTWWTMMftfi t ''"'''"'-I Il ' V Eagle photo: Obesity Is America's Top Health Problem If "you are what you eat" holds true, the American Ameri-can public is in nutritional nutrition-al trouble, according to University of Utah graduate gradu-ate student Matthew Ger-vase. Ger-vase. The American public is guilty of unbalanced diets, di-ets, too much food intake in contrast to inadequate physical activity, and an irrational approach to dieting which spells doom from the start, says the College of Health teaching assistant. "Obesity is America's number one health problem," prob-lem," he says, "and if I could make one suggestion, sugges-tion, it would be to add balance to the diet and some reasonable daily exercise. Both should be approached with reasonable reason-able expectations." Gervase explains that fad or crash diets which require re-quire great reductions in calorie intake are rarely successful because the dieter cannot sustain the program over several weeks. Exercise programs which are not phased in gradually are often discouraging dis-couraging because they produce aching muscles and general physical exhaustion. ex-haustion. "A good diet and exercise ex-ercise program will take off about two pounds a week and can actually become an enjoyable lifestyle," says Gervase. "And exercise plays an important role in curbing the appetitie, since those who exercise rarely overeat. Gervase advocates three meals a day, stressing stres-sing that breakfast pro-, vides important fuel for morning activities. Lunch should be the most substantial sub-stantial meal of the day, he says, since many hours of activity remain which will burn up calories before be-fore sleep. Gervase reports the four basic food groups are being be-ing revised into five categories, ca-tegories, separating vegetables vege-tables and fruits to encourage en-courage greater intake of these foods Rate U.S. Park Service Mason's Neck, Va. ers, representing 39 state wildlife and six federal agencies and 72 private pri-vate conservation organizations, organi-zations, according to William S.Clark, director direct-or of the NWF's Raptor Information Center. Clark attributed . the surprisingly high count of nearly 10,000 bald eagles-6,196 eagles-6,196 adults, 3,413 immature imma-ture birds, and 227 of indeterminate age -tothe intensity" of the NWF survey and the factthat its participants, under the' guidance of 43 eagle experts ex-perts serving as coordinators, coordi-nators, were looking only for eagles. A midwinter waterfowl water-fowl eagle inventory conducted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ser-vice during the first week of January reported only 5,315 eagle sightings -a figure that Clark attributed attrib-uted to the wildlife service's ser-vice's "primary interest" inter-est" in waterfowl. The same USFWS waterfowl eagle inventory last year counted only 4,516 bald eagles in the "lower 48." LDS Hospital Nurses Learn About Death If you knew you were going to die today and had your choice, 1 what five people would you like to see and what five things would you like to do between now and then? This unusual scenario is one part of a special two - hour 'Death and Dying" workshop each new LDS Hospital nurse participates in to learn how to deal with terminally termi-nally ill patients and their families. Whether we want to admit it or not, each of us is mortal and is going to die," says Luana Hood," R.N., who serves as course instructor with R. N. Sue Van Orman. "Yet unless we learn to face the prospect of our own death, we're not going to be able to help our dying patients face theirs." The two instructors use a wide variety of teaching methods to help the nurses accept their own mortality. One ex-ercise ex-ercise involves each nurse writing her own obituary.
