' if 7 ' I V .L' I LaWanca Page, who once did a fire act in nightclubs acoss the country, went on the road again as Ant Esther, the Bible-toting nemesis to Fred Sanford in 'San'cd and Son.' Under contract to Red'! ; oxx Enterprises, she accompanied ac-companied Foxx in .several appearances across the country and made ? jme solo appearances. Some time ago, she had discontinued her road work to care for her ailing mother in Los Angeles. However, her success in 'Sanford and Son' has made her able to hire a nurse for her mother. Her career began after her husband's death more than 20 years ago. She became the Bronze Goddess of Fire, lit cigarettes with her fingertips, and 'swallowed' fire in small nightclubs in order to earn a living. While at the Brass Rail Club in Los Angeles, her employer put her on stage to do a comedy act after watching her entertain the other performers per-formers backstage. People laughed and from then on she was a comedienne. LaWanda unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in 'Sanford and Son' during the first year of the series. Then former producer Aaron Ruben saw her act with the team of Leroy and Skillet (also members of the 'Sanford and Son' cast) and asked her to audition for the part of Aunt Esther. LaWanda makes her home in Los Angeles, California and has one married daughter, Clara TealJohnson. The Statler Brothers have again sponsored their Happy Birthday U.S.A. celebration on July 4 in their home town 0f Staunton, Va. The annual event traditionally draws from 40,000 to 50,000 people. The Statlers, composed of Don and Harold Reid, Phil Balsley and Lew Dewitt, have headlined each show.
