Use Of Hypnosis May Be Good Say Professor Use of hypnosis for therapeutic therapeu-tic treatment of people problems is becoming much more acceptable accep-table in today's society despite the fact that many movies and television shows still portray hypnosis as a bizarre practice. This is the observation of Dr. Leslie Cooper, professor of psychology at Brigham Young University, who is considered one of the top experts on hypnosis hyp-nosis in the Inter mountain area. 'The general public seems to be getting more aware of the positive posi-tive uses ofhypnosisespecially in the medical and dental fields Dr. Cooper noted. 'Psychologists 'Psycholo-gists use hypnosis as a therapeutic thera-peutic tool for treating repression. repres-sion. Dr. Cooper observed thatsome hypnotists who use the stage for entertainment have brought both good and bad reactions from the public. "While some of these 'entertainers' 'enter-tainers' may have created a better understanding of hypnosis among the public and may have allayed people's fears of being hypnotized," Dr. Cooper observed, ob-served, 'Other hypnotists on stage have created some very embarrassing moments forpeo- ple participating from the audience. Usually, those participating on the stage find it a very interesting in-teresting experience. Unfortunately, Unfor-tunately, those in the audience are frequently embarrassedby the actions of those on the stage. They may then associate this embarrassment with hypnosis, so that when they have a need to see a psychologist about a problem prob-lem for which the use of hypnosis hyp-nosis might be helpful, time must first be spent in overcoming their fears and apprehensions about doing embarrassing or stupid things, Dr. Cooper pointed out. He stresses that hypnosis is not a toy. pointing out that pro fessionals who use hypnosis in their work should mamtainamgn standard of competence and excellence ex-cellence and not just use it as a gimmick. Amateurs who buy books on hypnosis and begin experimenting with friends or roommates are heading for some possible real trouble, Dr. Cooper warns.
