Cuts Back On Litter Cans Because of rising costs, the Utah Highway Department has. streamlined its litter barrel program by reducing the number of highway barrel sites by more than half, and concentrating con-centrating the barrels at strategic st-rategic locations. The result has been a considerable cost savings for the department, without an increase in litter. State Highway Maintenance Operations Engineer Robert Wheadon says that although the barrel site reduction may appear ap-pear to be a drastic step, it does make sense. "It's much more economical to collect eight barrels in one area than one barrel in eight areas," he said. Wheadon says motorists motor-ists are now keeping their litter lit-ter in their vehicles and depositing de-positing it at the major litter collection points. Before the new program was inititated, maintenance officials in the department were having problems with litter barrels, especially in recreation areas. The widely dispersed barrels were intended to hold only small items of litter, such as paper scraps, wrappers and soft drink cans. However, travel trailer owners and summer home residents res-idents were using the barrels as a place to dump their weekly week-ly housekeeping garbage. One big load would often fill a barrel, a second would cause it to overflow, allowing the wind to spread litter all over the countryside. Documentary Golden Mike A KCPX Television Documentary, Docu-mentary, Anthem" has won the American Legion Auxiliary's Aux-iliary's 19 74 Golden Mike Award for America's best local lo-cal television program in the interest of youth. Mrs. Mel-vin Mel-vin W. Junge, Chairman of the American Legion's National C ommunications Committee, made the announcement during the organization's 54th Annual National Convention in Hollywood, Hol-lywood, Florida. "Anthem," a News 4 production pro-duction for KCPX Television, chronicled the 18th annual Veteran's Day Concert held in the Latter Day Saint Tabernacle Taber-nacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Participating in the event each year are the Utah National Guard's 23rd Army Band and over 300 students representing high schools in the Salt Lake Granite School district. 'Anthem" was begun in September, Sep-tember, 1973, when each high school chorus and the 40 piece band began independent preparations prepar-ations for the concert. The first half of the 30 minute doc-umentary doc-umentary re-caps these rehersals from day one to the night before the concert. Filming the concert inside the Tabernacle required four film camera crews and many hours of editing and sound mixing, mix-ing, according to Art Kent, KCPX News Director and Executive Ex-ecutive Producer of "Anthem."
