Show Computer Technology Used By Orem City Not only has a demand for computer technology come upon Orem City, but even now a new department and a new computer are in full-swing operation. Orem City's Data Processing Department, along with its IBM System 3 computer, has been servicing Orem's needs since May 1, 1973. Previous to the creation of the new department depart-ment and the acquisition of the new computer, Orem City had hired its needs to a private computer service bureau in Provo. The old procedure was costing Orem City about $1,200 per month, plus five or six days waiting-in-line time, plus a lot of extra trouble and time that was invariably required to adjust or correct minor errors. If you count the computer, Orem's Data Processing Department De-partment has three full time employees. em-ployees. Alan Dixon, 911 West Mountain View Park, Orem, is data processing manager. Mr. Dixon's duties include the running run-ning of existing computer programs, pro-grams, the design and creation of new programs, and the execution ex-ecution of the specific responsibilities re-sponsibilities connected with the System 3 computer. Viona Broderick, the second human employee, is kevcunch operator. opera-tor. Her duties include in-clude the typing and feeding of programs and instructions to IUDGET 2 1 the computer, as well as carrying carry-ing out special assignments, such as issuance of receipts, invoices, and assessments that are connected with some of the programs. The IBM System 3 computer has been on the market for several years, and has apparently ap-parently been a popular model for use by municipal city governments. gov-ernments. Provo and Logan have used similar, if not the same, types of computers. It appears that other cities, such a Bountifull, will probably soon be acquiring similar computers. comput-ers. Salt Lake City, however, utilizes a large 360 or 370 IBM computer for its copious needs. Orem's System 3 computer is used primarily for utility billing, bill-ing, city payroll account-ting, account-ting, legder and budgetary accounting, ac-counting, and special assessment assess-ment billing and accounting. The computer came to Orem city at a cost of approximately$80,000, to be paid for over a ten year period. Total costs for the computer com-puter and the Data Processing Department are running somewhere some-where over $1,600 per month. But, according to Mr. Dixon, the computor saves a tremendous tre-mendous amount of time, trouble, and money. For example, ex-ample, 7,500 utility bills can be sent through the computer in just nine hours, at the rate of 200 lines per minute. Weeks would be required to do the job by typewriter. Any errors or mistakes made in the programs for the computer can be corrected cor-rected in just a matter of minutes. min-utes. And, with a duplicate punched reading on the utility bill, considerable time is saved when customers have questions about their bills. The IBM 54I0CentralPro-cessing 54I0CentralPro-cessing Unit (CPU) is the important im-portant memory and brain for the entire computer. Upon the face of Orem's CPU is a handprinted hand-printed sign reading 'Colossus II. Mr. Dixon explains that this is the pet name that was given to Orem's System 3 computer com-puter by the data processors. Clossus I, after whom Orem's computer was named, was reportedly re-portedly a computer that starred star-red in C olossus the Phobia Project, Pro-ject, a thrilling movie that portrayed por-trayed a computer that took over Orem-Geneva Times January 3, 1974 the world. The IBM 5203 Reader is able to print out the information that the computer comutes. This information in-formation can be printed, as it often is, onto cards that can be mailed as bills or receipts to utility or service users. The Reader also prints out information in-formation that can be stored in ringed books forpermanent file. According to Mr. Dixon, the System 3 computer has so far been very successful in meeting the needs of Orem City. Since Orem City has converted to the system in fact, it was reported that there have been no major errors that can be attributed to the computer. And even though IBM services check the computer at least every few- months, it has been four or five months since the computer has needed even minor adjustment. "We've found the IBMSystem 3 computer to be very useful and successful in meeting the various city requisites that arise. In a long range sense, I expect that the System 3 will be successful in all of Orem City's expanding needs.' The IBM System 3 computer has 16 (16,000) unit storage positions, and if further expansion ex-pansion is necessary, can be adjusted to accommodate 64 K (64,000) unit storage positions, if not more. At present, System Sys-tem 3 uses one disc at a time in its disc drawer, but with adjustments and add-ons could take two discs at a time. The System 3 computer consists con-sists at present of five main components. The IBM 5496 keypunch key-punch tabel is where programs and information are typed on cards to feed to the computer. The System 3 computer, incidentally, in-cidentally, takes a much smaller smal-ler card than the bigger models, yet the smaller cards contain three horizontal lines and hold 96 unit spaces, as compared to only 80 spaces and one column on the larger cards. The IBM 5444 Disc Drive holds the big circular discs that contain programs, procedures, proced-ures, and master files that are repeatedly used. Each disc costs about $175, yet is able to hold two and one-half million digits (letter, or numerals) of information. Mr. Dixon has approximately ap-proximately 15 discs that he uses. The IBM 5424 Card Reader is able to rapidly sort and punch the computer cards that go with the programs.
