Nutcracker Ballet At BYU The fun and frolic of one of the brightest Christmas stories ever told (or danced) will come to Brigham Young University as Ballet West and the Utah Symphony Sym-phony Orchestra return again to stage Tschaikovsky's fantasy ballet, "The Nutcracker." Now a Provo holiday tradition, tra-dition, the ballet will be presented pre-sented Jan. 9 at 3:30 and 8 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center. Cen-ter. Tickets went on sale Monday. (Dec. 10) at the music ticket office. This year's cast will include company members of the Ballet West (a professional company which serves the Intermountain West) along with members of the Corps de Ballet of the University Univer-sity of Utah and a number of area children ages nine through 12 with ballet experience. The delightful ballet was first staged in Russia Dec. 17, 1891, when it delighted Czar Alexander HI and was rejected by the critics. cri-tics. Today it is part of the repertoire of nearly every ballet bal-let company in the world because of its Christmas appeal. The earthiness of pagan post-harvest post-harvest festivals, the spirituality of Christian rejoicing, and the European folk beliefs about animals ani-mals being gifted with speech on Christmas Eve are all woven into the fanciful story. It is set in Nuremberg, Germany, Ger-many, about 1850 in the home of two children, Clara and Fritz. At a big party around the Christmas Chris-tmas tree, Clara's godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, a mysterious myster-ious toymaker, gives Clara a nutcracker which looks like a toy soldier. After the party, Clara dreams that the toys come to life, and the nutcracker becomes a prince, who leads her through the beautiful beauti-ful land of snow. She meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and sees the dance of the flutes, waltz of the flowers, dance of the buffoons, buf-foons, and Spanish, Arabian, Chinese and Russian dancers. The highlight of the magical tour is the concluding dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier. And all these delights are set to the Ming ballet accompaniments ac-companiments of Tschaikovsky, which have been favorites for generations. f if . : u, ry December 13, 1973 Community Groups Sing At U-Mall Several local groups will be appearing at the University Mall this week to entertain the shoppers. shop-pers.
