The loser unhappy and in second place. Both teams are undefeated thus far. With a full house expected in the battle of two of the state's best Class AAAA basketball teams, Orem and Provo meet tonight at 7:30 in the BYU Fieldhouse with the preliminary Junior Varsity Var-sity game beginning at 5:45. It's Provo's home game. Both of the top rated teams are undefeated in pre-league play. Provo's best win came against highly ranked East (the pick of RegionThree) while Orem defeated West in Salt Lake City, a team selected as number two behind East in preseason rankings rank-ings for that region. But whatever the record is thus far, one can almost throw out the book. The rivalry is that great! For the past two years, Orem has won the Region Four championship, cham-pionship, beating out second place Provo. The two basketball powerhouses pow-erhouses split games the past two years. Orem's single league defeats the past two years came at the hands of the Provo boys, while the Bulldogs lost a game each year to Orem and to American Amer-ican Fork and Carbon respectively respect-ively in upsets to help the Tigers. Coach Harry Andersonexpects Provo to go for a man-to-man offense but should find the going a bit difficult. Orem has the height and the speed to stay with the much publicized Bulldogs. Bull-dogs. Orem willstart6'9JayChees-man willstart6'9JayChees-man at center against 6'11" Bret Vroman in a battle of the giants. Provo's Nielson and Sorenson will battle Orem's Don Allphin and Richard Herlin at the forward for-ward spots. The guard line should be an interesting battle between Orem's fine pair - Steve Hodson and Lorin Hunt - and Provo's Law brothers. Orem's Junior Varsity team, under the coaching of Harold Jacklin, made school history this season by going undefeated in pre-league play. The team has posted an 8-0 record (same as the Varsity) thus far and would like to extend that throughout the season. In last week's games, Orem traveled to Bountiful to play the usually tough Viewmont team and avenged last year's loss at home. The Tigers had a slow start, but edged Viewmont, 66-65, in the last few seconds to win their closest game of the year. Down by seven at halftime, the Tigers fell to 13 points behind at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Then Orem started passing and moving the ball better, getting it in to JayChees-man JayChees-man who scored three fieldgoals and four foul shots in the final quarter. Robert Louder, a junior forward for-ward who also plays guard at times, hit a 10-foot jumper to put Orem within one point of Viewmont with just 50 seconds left in the game. Hodson and Louder then teamed up to trap a Viewmont man at mid-court, causing him to travel with the Holiday Roller Skating Riverside Skating Rink Open Every Night From Christmas night to New Years Night 7:30 to 10:00 (except Sunday ) Also Every Afternoon From December 26 Hi to January I 2:00 to 4:00 pm Monday Family Night $2.00 per family (plus 25c skate rental) Tue and Wed. 7:30 - 10:00 85c Includes skates Open Christmas and New Year's Night 7:30 -10:00 ball. Orem, after calling a time out with 15 seconds left in the game, got the ball to Hodson who threw the ball up near the basket and Cheesman scored on a layup to put them ahead and win the game. However, Viewmont had a chance to win it but missed a layup that hit high on the backboard back-board and then rolled out as Cheesman intimidated the shooter. Herlin was high man with 16, followed byCheesmanandAllphin with 14 each, and Louder with 10. The Junior Varsity won, 65-61, 65-61, as five men hit double figures: fig-ures: Todd Williams, 14; Jeff Brimhall, 11; Robert Louder, KC Shaw, and Bruce Tregaskis 10 each. In a Saturday afternoon game at home, the Tigers out-gunned the American Fork Cavemen, 76-42, for the second win over them in a week. (See box score below.) The Junior Varsity had no trouble whipping the Cavemen, 68-41, with KC Shaw hitting 20, followed by Toddy Williams with 18. American Fork Varsity score: Hunter Safety Course Begins Jan. 2 on T.V. Competing in the tournament tomorrow afternoon and evening are defending state champ Pleasant Grove (again loaded this year but in Class AAA and in Region 6), Brighton, Olympus, and Orem. Orem already upset Olympus at home and will meet Brighton in mid-January in a league matcbu As for the Provo match last night, Coach Fred Rowland hoped his boys wo uld take the match. "Orem hasn't defeated Provo in the past six years, and we hope to reverse that trend, the coach observed. Last year Mark Hancock was the only winner for Orem as the Tigers ilost, 40-3. Provo wnet on to win the Region Four championship over Pleasant Grove, but the Bulldogs lost the state champi onship to the Vikings coming in fifth. Orem took 21st place at state. In comparative scores against a common opponent this year, Orem should have defeated the Bulldogs on 'the basis of whipping Olympus, 29-21, while the Bulldogs Bull-dogs lost to Olympus, 40-17. Provo had a 5-1 pre-league season whiles the Tigers posted a 6-1 record with the only loss coming from Cottonwood when they wrestled the unsual "freestyle "free-style method. Coach Rowland, now in his third year a'c Orem High, noted that this is the strongest area in the state for wrestling. During Dur-ing the past jlO years, three teams from the valley - Plesant Grove, Provo, and Orem - have taken five state championships.
