Show 13 Letter To The Editor Crossword Puzzle Orem-Geneva Times Thursday, June 6, 1972 AN OPEN LETTER TO: Republican Voters Orem Dist 23, Republican County Delegates and other Interested Voters. Saturday, June 24, we represented repre-sented the OremDlstrict 23 at the Utah County Republican Convention. Con-vention. In preparing for and attending the convention a large number of problems and irregularities in the planning and management of the convention became evident. 1. Prior to the mass meetings as well as to the county convention, con-vention, information dispersed to district chairmen and delegates was extremely poor, wnai was evident. When entering the high school through the high school doors, the foyer there was found to be packed and swarming with many people. Tables set up for registration of delegates were surrounded with people three and four deep. According to officials questioned later, copies of the proposed platform plus amendments amend-ments were supposed to be available avail-able at those tables, but it was difficult to see the woman assigned assi-gned to checkin the delegates, let alone see anything else either ei-ther up or down the table. 3. In checking in as delegates no identification whatsoever was was extremely yuui. "uai u . ... hv tho reniiireri. as lone as the Mrs on uy me printed in local papers was ha .".7 " th mma cnalr. could have entered that hall, knowing the name of a delegate from some district, and carrying a replica of the printed card, and could have registered as that delegate. 4. Again as the meeting began, lack of preparation and planning showed itself in the choppy handling of the flag salute, pledge of allegiance, and national anthem. The excellent rendition of the national anthem by Donna Dal ton, and the professional handling of the posting of the colors by the Orem High School ROTC color guard, were all but lost in the awarkdness created lack of management by without error! 2. Upon arrival at the convention, con-vention, the lack of anticipation of possible problems and preparation pre-paration for handling them was entering the hall gave the name of the delegates from the district dis-trict they came to represent and presented an official card which carried no name, only a place for signatures. STATE, OREM, UTAH 5. Rules and Order of Business Busi-ness were handled and Roberts Rules of Order were accepted by the convention delegates. From that time on throughout the evening, even-ing, total disregard to these rules of order took place in many instances specifically during the report of the platform and resolutions committee, without the consent of the body. People who had been acknowledged by the chair were interrupted and argued with. People who attempted attemp-ted to call a point o r to make an amendment were totally disregarded, dis-regarded, and many from the conventionbecame so angry at the way the presentation was being handled by the chair that they shouted out their discussions without' acknowledgement from the chair. 6. The candidates running for office, as acknowledged by one official from the platform during the evening, seemed to be of excellent calibre and gave very good presentations. The biggest problem In this regard is that the major portion of the evening was spent listening to those who would be nominated in the state convention and a minor portion of the evening was given to those directly related to the county convention. 7. The county platform showed the most hurt in the proportioning of the evening's events Because of the crowds in the halls prior to the convention, copies of the platform were sparsely distributed, dis-tributed, when the platform was read, it was read quickly to facilitate the progress of the convention, con-vention, but to the detriment of those listening without copies. The worst infringementherewas brought out by one delegate who ACROSS 1. Earth pigment 6. Looped band 11. Dry land 13. Wisdom goddess 14. Uncommon 15. Affirmative 17. Arabian prince 18. Finish 19. Wing pointed out that there were a number of proposals which had been submitted In accordance with regulations which did not appear on the platform before the convention. The answer given from the chair was that we feel there were too many to fit within the amount of space we thought the platform should be inlength." . 9. Lack of Preparation and planning on the part of county officials was again evident when the delegates were adjourned to senatorial and legislative district conventions for those districts in which there was a contested position. There were no maps and officials were unsure of the areas to meet in each of the senatorial and legislative districts. 10. Following the presentation presen-tation of the senate nominees, who made a good showing in the small amount of time allotted them, a final and most serious irregularity in the proceedings of the convention shown the convention showed itself. Only the identification card was used and was marked with an X when a ballot or ballots had been given. The senatorial ballots were brought out after some delegates dele-gates had already picked up their county commission ballots and there was no way except to take the delegate's word that he had not received a ballot already. b. There were candidates standing in the halls, as well as food dispensers between the table where ballots were handed out, the booths where delegates voted, and the ballot boxes. c. Five names of delegates to be selected to go to the state convention in addition to those selected from the mass meetings and the county central committee were to be recorded on one of the ballots. Which ballot they were to be recorded on was not well defined. When a judge standing stand-ing at the ballot box was asked which one to put it on, she answered, on either one," This would indicate that names onboth ' ballots would be counted, thus making it possible for delegates to vote twice for their nominees with no method of checking ballots, numbers, etc. to prevent this illegal practice. In analysis of the proceedings of the convention, it could well be labeled a farce, an infringement infringe-ment upon the inherent rights of the individual granted under the United States constitution, and an affront to the intelligence and ability of the American citizens and republican party members to handle their affairs through the use of the democratic process. One way of putting the proceedings pro-ceedings was described as railroading rail-roading the people into compliance com-pliance with the desires of the cuair, riding rough-shod over the delegates to suit the purposes and intent of the chair. In the present convention, the candidates appeared to be well qualified. But should the American Ameri-can public become so placid that they do not rebel against such proceedings and demand that such conventions be carried on according ac-cording to rules which allow for the voice of the people to speak, rules, laws, and dictators could easily step in and take away every bit of freedom America yet possesses. The voice of the people can and must be heard in an orderly feshion. We believe there were many other delegates to the county convention who were equally dis-satsified dis-satsified with the procedures and the manner in which it was carried out. We solicit your support so that we can assist in making future conventions more orderly and representative of the voice of the people. .
