Predators Are Asset Sportsmen have long looked upon up-on predatory animals as a serious threat to the sport of hunting. The common belief was that any animal that killed a game species should be exterminated. Today, this thinking is being challenged. Various methods have been undertaken un-dertaken to control predator populations pop-ulations and thus protect the more desirable game animals. Natural predation, however, is anessent-ial anessent-ial part of nature's well calculated cal-culated scheme for a healthy wildlife population. ' Predators harvest part of the surplus of any wildlife crop, taking tak-ing the weakest, the physically handicapped, and the sick. What they do not kill will be removed by weather, disease or starvation. star-vation. What most sportsmen do not know, is .that predators are an asset to the sport. A predators victims are usually the weakest of a 'given wildlife species because be-cause they are the easiest to catch. Thus the predator helps to maintain a healthy and alert population of game species. Predation also helps to control disease. Only the physically superior su-perior among the preyed upon species survive to reproduce. The result is a better game animal for the hunter to harvest. Even the natural nest robber serves a useful purpose. He forces the feathered victim to move to another area and try for , another brood. The result is a staggered hatch;- eliminating a total kill of newly-born offspring off-spring by a single spell of bad weather. Orem-Geneva Times Wasting Game Meat Illegal Wasters of game meat are the object of concern for Utah wildlife wild-life officers who remind outdoorsmen out-doorsmen of regulations prohibiting pro-hibiting misuse of game fish and animals. According to the Wildlife Resources Re-sources Code, it is unlawful to waste or permit to be wasted or spoiled any protected wildlife or any part of them. Donation of game meat to another person is permitted provided pro-vided a donation certificate accompanies ac-companies the meat. It must state what protected wildlife has been donated, date of donation, and the wildlife license number, address, and signatute of the donor. It is unlawful to sell or offer for sale any game meat in Utah. The hide and head of big game animals may be legally sold.
