Art Exhibited By Baughman Design Inc. Members of the staff at Milo Baughman Design, located on Provo's E. Center Street, are proving that applied design, which is their . business, doesn't pre clude their interests in pure art forms. The Milo Baughman Design Design firm has operated on the Surplus of Teachers Now In Utah Teacher shortages experienced experienc-ed in Utah and other states in the years after World War II are rapidly being replaced by . teacher surpluses. T his was the conclusion reached reach-ed by Utah Foundation, the private pri-vate research organization in a study of teacher supply and demand de-mand in Utah. Most of the new teachers hired by Utah school districts last year were employed to fill vacancies resulting from the turnover of staff rather than the creation of ' new teaching posts. In 1969-70 the number of teaching positions in Utah increased by only 223, ' a rise of L,7 percent. On the other hand, 1,803 new teachers were hired to fill vacancies created cre-ated by turnover of staff. These figures exclude 673 teachers who transferred to other districts within the state last year. The Foundation report shows that Alpine school district employed em-ployed a total of 699 professional school personnelinl969-70. This L i 1 f i represenieu an increase 01 in the size of the professional staff for the year. A total of 113 persons were employed to fill vacancies created by individuals who did not return from the previous pre-vious year. The turnover rate in Alpine school district during 1969-70 was 16.2 percent. It should be noted, however, that this turnover rate may be exaggerated exag-gerated somewhat by individuals who transferred to other school In contrast to the leveling off in the demand for new teachers, the supply of new teachers has been growing rapidly in Utah, according ac-cording to the study. The number num-ber of prospective teachers graduating grad-uating from Utah colleges has increased more than three fold within the past fifteen years. It is expected that 3,071 college-trained college-trained teachers will graduate from Utah's six teacher training train-ing institutions this year. This number compares with 2,209 teacher graduates recommended for certification in 1965, 1,678 How Does Your Wardrobe Look Today-? GIVE YOUR CLOTHES THE ATTENTION THEY NEED a) .... Communications Workshop will deal with graphic and exhibit ex-hibit design, audio-visual presentations pre-sentations and public relations. Environment west will provide interior and exterior design and landscape architecture, residen- tial and city planning to the firm's clients. The old carriage house, which was built in the early 1900's," has been made into a little theatre and gallery. There, Baughman's creative staff will exhibit their serious art to which they devote much of their spare time. Items exhibited will range from ceramics, photography, sculpture sculp-ture and naturalistic landscapes to "hardedge" paintings. Q - May I use my GI insurance in-surance policy as security for a loan by naming the lending institution in-stitution as beneficiary? A - No. The law and policy state that the policy is not assignable as-signable by the insured.Whenthe selection of a beneficiary appears ap-pears to be an assignement, the VA advises the veteran that it is not acceptable. graduates in 1960, and 919 graduates grad-uates In 1955. Because of the growing supply of trained teachers graduating each year from Utah colleges and the leveliig off in the demand for new teachers by the Utah schools, the percentage of graduates grad-uates who obtain teaching posts in Utah has been declining during dur-ing recent years. In 1963 and 1964 approximately 55 percent of the college-trained teachers secured teaching positions within the state. By 1969 the percentage per-centage had dropped below 42 percent. In addition to recent graduates of teacher-training institutions, Utah recruits some teachers from former teachers who wish to return to teaching and teachers living in other states who wish to transfer to Utah. During the 1969-70 school year, Utah employed em-ployed 298 teachers who had taught the previous year in another state. A total of 63, or 21, of these out-of-state teachers had come from California. Califor-nia. Foundation analysts note that with the increased supply of qualified qual-ified teachers, the "emergency" or authorized teacher serving without proper certification has largely been eliminated from the Utah schools. In 1969-70, only 121 teachers in Utah (less than 0.9 percent of the total) were teaching without proper certification. certifi-cation. The percentage of emergency emer-gency teachers in Utah has been reduced steadily from 35 percent in 1946, 23 percent in 1950, 8 percent in 1960, and 4 percent in 1965.
