Dave Allphin, Defensive End Dave Allphin, Orem Gridder Makes T Team Every so often, a young man comes along and tries out for a football team without much hope of making that team. Through hard work, desire, and a 101 attitude, at-titude, he not only makes the team , but becomes one of the outstanding players in the college col-lege ranks. The person typified above could well be Orem's Dave Allphin, a former Orem High School all-around all-around athlete who has become one of the outstanding defensive ends in college football. Allphin fits the category of the player who "didn't have much of a chance." Even though he was a fine athlete at Orem High under un-der Udell Westover, he wasn't all-stater like some of his teammates. team-mates. In fact, his only football honor during his years at Orem High was all-region during his senior year. His older brother Bob was a member of the BYU football team, and perhaps that more than anything any-thing else helped Dave to decide to try out for the Cougar varsity. var-sity. BYU head coach Tommy Hudspeth Hud-speth has never been known to refuse to look at any player, so I offered Allphin a chance to try out and make the BYU team. Allphin, as predicted, did try out for the team, and his rapid development helped him move up in the ranks until he became a semi-regular by the middle of last season. He started the 1966 season as a question mark because of a knee injury, but when workouts started, start-ed, he was In there ready for duty. His play quickly made him as the number one defensive left end, a job which he does not seem likely to relinquish. Allphin's Inspired play was never more evident than last week in BYU's 1966 opener against San Jose State. He made three unassisted tackles and was in on several more, leading his team in defensive tackling. His best play of the night was when San Jose State was backed back-ed up against their own goal line with the ball resting inside in-side the five yard line. Th Spartan quarterback pitched out to his fullback who was attempting attempt-ing to run around Allphin's end. Glade Christiansen -- center real tiger on defense. Allphin shrugged off one block and tackled the ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. The two points proved very valuable since it put San Jose State 10 points behind. Hudspeth is not reluctant to give praise to Allphin. 'Dave is one of the finest boys I have ever coached. I wish every player play-er was as easy to teach as he is. If I had 30 more players like Dave, we would give the national champs a real run for their money. said the likeable coach about his pleasant surprise. Only a Junior at BYU this year, Allphin still has the better part of two full seasons ahead of him. A growing player, Allphin All-phin is blessed with better than average speed and strength for the defensive end position. He does not possess great size at 185 pounds, but certainly has learned how to get the most from the tools he has. Hudspeth is hoping the other ten defensive players will follow Allphin's example and provide a very discourteous greeting for Colorado State University backs tomorrow night. Kickoff time for the game in Ronmey Stadium in Logan will be 1:30 p.m. New Mexico State is led by a strong candidate for Ail-American honors, senior tailback Jim Bohl, a 5-10, 190-pounder who was the nation's third-leading rusher last season with 1191 yards. Already drafted as a future choice by Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League, Bohl is a broken field runner deluxe. He's fast, has great change of direction and great acceleration. Bohl is not a one-man team by any stretch of the imagination. The Aggies have a talented quar terback, Sal Olivas, who, until in jured in the season's sixth game last year, was rated as good as former NMSUgreatCharlie John son, now playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
