Travel U. S. 40 to the exciting Flaming Gorge area northeast of Vernal. There you will find a refreshing change from the usual highly - commercialized tourist trap. WEIRD BUT BEAUTIFUL Observe the Green River, cutting cut-ting like a red artery through grotesquely twisted and tilted layers lay-ers of br-'ghtly colored rock deep In the heart of the Uinta Mountains. Moun-tains. Stand atop the magnificent Flaming Gorge dam and peer down 455 feet to the surging river below. Although huge trucks appear as toys on the apron of the dam, schools of trout can be seen plainly in the cool, clear water just below. Descend by elevator deep within the dam and see the powerplant which provides enough energy for an average city of 108,000 persons. The last bucket of the 970,000 cubic yards of concrete was placed in the dam on November 15, 1962; the first hydroelectric power was produced on November Novem-ber 11, 1963; it was dedicated by Mrs. Lyndon B. Almost a hundred years earlier Major John Wesley Powell explored ex-plored the canyons of the Green River by boat. His entry in 'The Exploration of the Colorado River" for May 26, 1869 reads: The river glides on in a quiet way as if it thought a mountain range no formidable obstruction to its course. It enters the range by a flaring, brilliant, red gorge that may be seen from the North a score of miles away . . . This is the head of the first canyon we are about to explore ... an introductory one to a series made by the river through this range. We name it Flaming Gorge. TAKE BOAT RIDE If you haven't a boat, rent one, but by all means, float down the 91 mile waterway deep into otherwise other-wise inaccessible, wild, geologic structures. As the gentle, rolling lowlands evolve into awsome cliffs more than 1,500 feet high, witness the ancient Indian petroglyphs carved deep in the sides of the rock. LIFELIKE DISPLAYS Visit the two handsome newly- erected tourist centers, projects of the Ashley National Forest. Blending well with its magnificent magnifi-cent background, one is located at the dam. The other, the unique Red Canyon Overlook, provides a; spectacular view of the deep canyons that contain Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Inside is a small museum where native wild-flowers wild-flowers are preserved so per fectly, you can almost catch their scent. Doctor's Speak To Jaycees The Orem Jaycee Wives were host to their husbands, American Fork Jaycees and wives, and other special guests, at a meeting held in the Orem High School's Little Theater. The meeting fea tured a doctors' panel discussion on 'sex education for children. The Jaycee members and guests were welcomed by Jaycee Wives president, Mrs. Carolyn Boley. Mrs. Boley then Introduced the distinguished guests of the evening, even-ing, three prominent local doctors. doc-tors. Dr. Fred D. Kartchner,Dr. Richard S. Clark, and Dr.Thales H.Smith. The doctors formed this panel after seeing a real need for such a program. Their program is the correct educated way to Inform children in sex education.
