Show Deer Range Improved by Department Work Is progressing this fall in two of three areas to improve the quality of food production of deer winter ranges. The Utah1 Fish and Game Commission, during dur-ing a regular business meeting in Salt Lake City last week, approved ap-proved a $35,000 dollar range rehabilitation project for the Red Creek Flat in Daggett County. Work on a similar project has been underway all fall near Duchesne, Du-chesne, Utah, where two large caterpillars have been employed to remove pinion-Juniper and other low nutrient plants. The area is then reseeded with grasses grass-es and browse by hand and from the air. Department spokesmen pointed out that as a prerequisite to effectively carrying out this rehabilitation program, these critical winter ranges are first purchased and fenced by the Department. VERN BAILEY Ex-Orem Gridder Making Good At Dixie College Vern Bailey of Orem is playing first string of the Dixie College Rebel football team this year and according to Coach Sark Ar-slanlan Ar-slanlan he Is doing an outstanding Job. The 6'2", 235 pound tackle Is a graduate of Orem High School. The Rebels are ranked 6th in the Junior Colleges of. the nation and have a 8-1 record for this year. Pheasant Policy Adopted by State A policy guide for managing .pheasants was adopted by the Utah State Fish and Game Commission last week. The policy guide was prepared by members of the Landowner - Sportsmen-Game Department Committee, more commonly called the Triangle Committee. This was done at the r e qu e s t of the Commission Chairman. The policy guide reaffirms the position of all represented groups Commission, Department, Farm Bureau, Farmers Union and Sportsmen to unitedly work together in carrying out a long-range long-range pheasant management program pro-gram which will be most beneficial benefi-cial to landowners and sportsmen. sports-men. Primary features of the policy include the management objective of providing the maximum recreation rec-reation to the sportsmen of Utah consistent with perpetuation and utilization of the pheasant resource re-source and compatible with other land uses and problems of landowners land-owners on an area basis. The five-day special notice hunts planned for two portions of herd unit 27B, Range Creek-Cedar Ridge and Range Creek-Little Park have been announced by the Board of Big Game Control and tne Utah Department of Fish and Game for November 28 to December 13. There are plenty oi permits remaining for either area. Department spokesmen pointed out that sportsmen who obtained a special permit for earlier hunts may not take part in this five-day notice hunt since each license holder is allowed only one special permit this year. They further reminded sports men that the general tag is not valid and cannot be filled on this hunt. Most of the Cedar Ridge and Little Park areas are public land with access into each via pubic roads. Little Park can be reached via US 6-50 and Horse Canyon. Public access to Cedar Ridge from highway 6-50 is via Soldier Creek, Nine Mile Creek and then up through Cottonwood Canyon. Gun Safety Offered by SFG The Utah State Department of Fish and Game announced plans this week to conduct a short course of Instruction in gun safety in the home, designed primarily for the housewife. Lee Robertson, Robert-son, Department safety officer pointed out that the primary goal of this program is to sufficiently acquaint the housewife with guns in order to dispell her fear of them.
