Today, modern "prospectors" "pros-pectors" are working a space-age space-age bonanzatourism. One million tourists a year are expected to visit America's newest inland resort at Park City, Utah, when all phases of its development plans are completed. A natural sports haven nestled in the Wasatch Mountains 24 miles east of Salt Lake City, Park City has been busy all year preparing for its grand opening for the 1963-64 1963-64 ski season. Even the maintenance main-tenance shops of United Park City Mines Co. have been ' turning out ski lift equipment. But how does an old town undergo a facelift? First, of course, there must W imoriey. An early boost was given by an Area Redevelopment Re-development Administration loan of $1,232,000. Further funds were Invested by the United Park City Mines Co., Anaconda Conner Co. and American Smelting and Refining Re-fining Co. It Is anticipated that a total of $5,590,000 will have to be invested in the project by 1985. First of all, the plans called for a gondola-type aerial tramway, a system relatively new In America though widely used In mountanious parts of Europe This called for international inter-national cooperation between Cannon Construction Co. of Salt LaVe Citv and Pohlig-Heckel-Bleichert of Cologne, Germany. The German company com-pany engineered and designed design-ed the tramway using hill profiles pro-files from Park City terrain. The American company encountered en-countered some complications with the German blueprints, which ranged in size from 8" x 12" to 17" x 144", and featured notations in German and English and both the metricand standard foot-inch scales. One of the biggest engineering engineer-ing challenges was posed by the rugged terrain surrounding surround-ing Park City, across which a string of gondola- towers had to be erected. In most cases, tower sites were located on precipitous slopes in heavily wooded areas. This meant that timber tim-ber and brush had to be cut and removed to allow the building of access roads to each Individual tower site. Timber also had to be removed from the lift line route. For this project, expert advice ad-vice was asked from the U.S. Forest Service, which recommended recom-mended a type of brush burner burn-er which disposed of timber and brush with a steam of ignited air and kerosene. Once access roads were bulldozed, bull-dozed, the arduous job of transporting 500 cubic yards of concrete and 107 tons of structural steel up the moun tain began. Native materials such as stone and cedar sidings have been utilized utiliz-ed in the main buildings. In spite of the international aspect of the tramway, most of the work at Park City is attributable to Utah Industries. Steel produced art U.S. Steel's Geneva Works, near Provo, Utah, was fabricated by Steel Contractors, Inc., of Salt Lake City for the tramway carrying carry-ing system. And gondola cars for the tram were built by another Salt Lake City firm Fibron Co., a division of Utah Resin Co. Largest building in the complex com-plex is the Treasure Mountains Moun-tains Center, which has dimensions dimen-sions of 250 x 85'. The center includes a restaurant-cafeteria-convention area with seats Cor 350 plus a sun amd dance terrace. Also housed in the building is a 2400 square foot exhibit arcade, a 125-seat with dancing and entertainment entertain-ment facilities, administrative offices, Miner's Find ski shop and "Squnch House," a child day-care center. At the upper tramway terminal, term-inal, 9,300 feet above sea level, is the Summit House, which includes a 200-seat cafeteria, ski patrol building comprises 10,000 square feet and commands com-mands a 50-mile panorama of the surrounding ares. A third building, the Silver King Mid-Station, serves as a scenic viewpoint half-way along the tramway route adjacent ad-jacent to the world famous Silver King mine. Despite its basically utilitarian utilit-arian purpose, the aerial tramway tram-way is likely to become one of the most poular features of the resort.
