Show Sports -Seeing With Dean By Sportcaster Dean Bennett Well, the USU-BYU hassle over basketball players Is finally over. The Cougars won't be playing Darnel Haney any more in the forseeable future. fut-ure. We hope things will soon be dying down, and be forgotten. forgot-ten. The Skyline race' has been tainted with the manuvering the past few weeks on this BYU-USU situation, but now that things are settled, that is, with Haney, the Ags are definit ely the better ball club, maybe the Skyline title chase can get on to a conclusion , Right now, with Utah out of the way on the NCAA probation probat-ion limb, USU and CSU will be fighting it out to see who comes out on top. The old Jinx has held even in the last year of the Skyline conference season, sea-son, and no teams will ever harve won the league title without with-out losing at least one game. The big one comes up this Saturday when Utah State invades in-vades Ft. Collins to tangle with the Colorado Aggies. The only loss by USU has come at the hands of Utah. The Utah Aggies have handed CSU their only loss, at Logan. Saturday, the C-Aggies get a chance at revenge. And you can bet that in the small Ft Collins gym. they'll get it. It will be a battle of Greens big Bill Green of CSU, Cornell Green of USU. It could actual ly be that the two clubs will wind up tied for the spot, elt her first for a berth In the NCAA Regionals at Provo, March 16-17. That would be a lot of playing off and would naturally put the Skyline re presentative behind when it came to the finals at Provo. Our pick for the four clubs at present would UCLA, Loy ola, the winner of the Oregon State - Air Force Academy playoff, which we think would be Oregon State, and Afizona State, as the winner in the Border-Skyline playoffs. At the NCAA regional it would be everyone for himself, with be Oregon State and Arizozna State our pick to go to Louisville Louis-ville and the National Champ-ionshisp. Champ-ionshisp. But before we get to any of that, here's, a great deal of work to be " done in finishing out the Skyline Conference's last season. Three big week ends of double bills should whet anyone's appetite for some good post-season playoffs. Watch out for the Winter Olympics sometime In the future. fut-ure. They may be at our Utah Resorts. It was announced re cently that the resort owners were going after the Olympic games by fixing up around the place, getting the Ski slopes and resorts facilities in good enough shhape that they could handle such a- thing as the Olympics. Righ now, they're a far cry from what went up at Squaw Valley and even that seemed almost inadequate at times. And don't forget what's in store for anyone trying to get the Winter games. Japan, sev eral of the European countries and some of the South American Ameri-can countries have indicated interest and money talks. The United States holding of the games at Squaw Valley recent ly may be enough to keep the Utah area from getting the games for many years to come, But aaain. with the wonderful slopes available in the Utah mountains, it would be shame not to at least make a try to get them. Orem High Tigers Tackle Payson On Home Court Thursday, Feb 1 5 Orem High continue their quest for a State Tournament berth when they entertain the Payson Lions at home on Thursday, February 16. The Tigers changed what had been a dismal outlook on chances for the State playoffs with a lopsided victory over Carbon. They have three games to play and must win two of them to assure a Tournament opportunity. opport-unity. Since the last game is with the tough iProvo Bulldogs, the two other games, with Pay-son Pay-son and Springville are "must" games for Orem. In their first meeting with the Lions, the Tigers had to go into overtime to defeat them, 58-52. Payson put up a very determined fight and it could happen again, but it isn't as likely since the Tigers are playing at Orem. Last week Payson ram into, a surprisingly strong Spjmgville squad and lost 76-55.' However, the Lion defense didn't look bad, especially espec-ially Kent Oborn, who hit 21 points. Last week Orem broke from a third-place tie with Carbon by trouncing the Dinosaurs at Price, 70-48. Paul LanaggeT again led the Orem attack, scoring 21 points for the second sec-ond straight week. "He was almost al-most matched by Carbon All-region All-region candidate Jeff Vogrinec, who had 17. But Vogrinec could find little support as the next highest figure for the Dinos was Pace Hansen's eight. Orem had three others in double figures. Brent Howe had 14 and Steve Marshall and Dan Goulding 11 each. The Tigers had a brilliant first half, outscoring Carbon tteffion Nine IDS Church Teams Play Final Game Sat.
