I knew this expensive expen-sive perfume would be a hit at home if I could just keep it to myself what I had paid for it. But I could not, I had to confess. A Waltham Watch which was priced at $75. you could buy for $42.50. A Polo-roid Polo-roid Camera, about $10u could be purchased for $70. Cigarettes Cigaret-tes 10 cents a package. McConaughy of Morgan had borrowed a pack of cigarettes from Claybaugh of Brigham, when Mac paid Charley back with a ten cent package, it created a debate as to whether he should pay back three packages pac-kages at the price of ten cents each or 1 at 30c. We all had a lot of laughs over it. Later that day, Saturday, we had a briefing from Commander Command-er Bob Selman, Air Group Commander. Selman was a man of 38, he has a wife and three children. Bob, a career man, and devoted to his duty, ahd after talking with him, you could see he was a man who loved to fly. He told of the different type planes on the ship and their task. Selman stressd how closely they watch the pilots, so as to prevent slip ups and accidents. He said if for any reason they thought a pilot was not in the right mental, and physical condition, con-dition, they would not let them fly. For instance he said if a boy gets mail from home that seems to upset him, he is grounded until they feel he is ready both mentally and physically. He said the one thing the pilots when they go off that carrier, have on their mind is to get the mission completed and return to the flat top. "AD-7 SKYR AIDER" The Douglas AD-7 SKYRA-IDER SKYRA-IDER is a single-engine, single-place, single-place, attack fighter plane designed de-signed for both carrier and land based operations. The proto-types of the AD-7 were designed to carry a 1,000-pound 1,000-pound bomb, but during the Korean conflict they proved capable of carrying a load of 10,500 pounds, more than the four-engined B-17 FLYING FORTRESS of World War II. Now the AD-7 is classified as a nuclear weapons carrier. ' The power plant of the aircraft air-craft is the Wright S-3350 with a 2,700 horsepower rating. Commander Selman pointed out that the day of dog fights in the air is about a thing of the past. Most all the planes are equipped with the sidewinder side-winder and Sparrow missiles. The Sidewinder he explained will pick up the heat from a planes exhaust from a distance dis-tance of about two miles when it is released, thus following the heat and destroying the enemy plane. This rocket Is made for about $900 each. The "Sparrow" as the other rocket is called, rides the radar beam, As soon as the target is locat ed, by radar, the Sparrow is locked onto the radar which it follows to the object, and de stroys it. In case the Missile misses the target, it will turn around and make another at tempt. There is one big dan ger however, it sometimes comes back to the ship that nas just fired it. This rocRet will pick up a target .about 10 miles away, long before it can be sighted. Commander Selman said the navy had about 3 accidents for every 10 thousand hours of flying. He said when the planes refuel in the air they are just yards apart. Selman said up in the air you had only one other guy to watch and worry about. He said he knew exactly what you are going to do and that you knew what he was going to do, so he could see no comparison in the poss Ibillty for an accident as com pared to , driving an auto- Orem-Geneva Times Thursday March 30, 1961 Jit' f7 (P J:': . ? He brought his talk to an end by saying in a very humble tone, "I do not fear any plane built. I have the best job in the navy today as a group commander." Saturday, we were the guests of the crew at dinner, the boys from Utah were all notified and we had dinner with them, The boys and all of us spent very interesting time getting to know each other. The boys sure did seem to ap preciate chatting with some one from home. ' - ' Later we had pictures taken of the group. It was the opinion opin-ion of all, that the sailors mess . rated the highest. It is served cafeteria style, and they could go back as many times as they wanted for seconds. Believe me I can see where the little scrawney kid goes away a boy and comes back home a man. We would look at the boys plate and then his size it made one wonder how he could get around the plateful. Then on second look our plate had! more than his. I guess it was1 just good cooking, and the life of a sailor. The menu consisted consist-ed of Yams, corn, or beans or both, meat and gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, milk and Ice cream. There was about four different salads to choose from . Continued nextvweek If you readers can bear with me.
