LANDLUBBERS Continued from Front Page for all planes, guns, etc. The thing that impressed ail of the Lubbers was the business-like way in which the ships business busin-ess was carried on. The Life of ease aboard ship, which many of us visualize is all false. ' During operations such as we are now having everyone works about 18 hours each day. They cat-nap at times but are on duty all the time. One of the Negro seaman asked to have a word with Captain Cousins, He explained to Captain Cap-tain Cousins that he did not have any segregation problem aboard the Midway. The Negro then told the Captain that everyone aboard ship worked like niggers. Commander Schela briefly stated his duties, and the op portunities and training the men received. He pointed out that there were 425 men in the supply depot of the ship. Commander Schela also told of a young Ensign Thomas who had just recently graduated from college and had 75 men under his direction. He stressed the development the young man would receive for future work if he decided not to make the navy a career. . ' He told about Lieut. Pryde whose duty it was to handle over one million dollars of the ships and men's money and the training he was receiving from this job. Lieut Pryde's job was to make exchanges for foreign money when they arrived in ports. He sent the money to dependants. In addition, he had 35 different storerooms which were alloted $105,000 per quarter to operate on. Commander Com-mander Schela pointed out that the training these young men received would make them highly eligible in many fields of private industry. Facts About the Supply Dept. The storerooms carred over 10,000 different items. It makes about 3300 issues each month. In case of war the stockroom would be self sustaining for about one month at sea, it would then meet a supply ship, for some of the .bulky items'. The storerooms carried over 95 out of every hundred items asked for on the ship. It costs $1.05 per day to feed the men. Grocery in ventory is $300,000. Officers aboard ship buy their own food. It costs each one of them about $40 a month. .The ship has a savings program pro-gram that pays 4 per cent interest in-terest under the supervision of Commander Schela . 13 spare engines are carried for aircraft that cost about $375,000 each. OUTDOOR TIPS Fishing The trouble with bait is that little fish like it as well as lunkers. Here's a way to sneak it by the small fry before they have a chance to steal It. When using a mayfly larvae or similar bait, you can get it to deep water fast by hanging hang-ing a fence staple on the hook. This protects the bait and a sllgnt jerk will dislodge iti Step out in HS&M has set the pace for Easter Parades for more than 70 years.
