Second-Class Postage Paid at Orem, Utah THE GREAT PARADOX A great majority of citizens think this country the most desirable place in the world to live and sing to the world the praises of our beautiful homes, streets parks, freeways, cities, and national monuments. We also pride ourselves in being a technilogical and productive prod-uctive nation enjoying such benefits as automobiles, television sets, radios, refrigerators, washers, and nousenoiu appuances 10 a greater degree tnan any other people on earth. Morever, we are a travel loving nation, driving more cars on more miles per roads and freeways than any other national group. As we ride along our streets and highways enjoying the wonders of our land, a seemingly impossible drama, a paradox unfolds itself before us. Strewn indiscrimin-atedly indiscrimin-atedly along both sides of the highway, and evidently by the same persons who so proudly describe our land in glowing terms, is a conglomeration of unsightly cans, rags, bottles, wrappers, cartons, napkins, papers and other forms of debris. The solution to this problem lies in changing the public attitude. "Public attitude" is actually the sum total of many individual attitudes and. If there is to be improvement in the outdoor manners of the public, we must change individual attitudes. It is hoped that the city and garden gard-en clubs will eventually take a stand on this important issue and that the state will pass laws to keep trash-keepers trash-keepers and low class stores and fruit markets in check, but it is the public that must realize that they are the ones who will have to take a stand or the highways will become just another dump, THE AMERICAN WAY Covered with Grade A Naugahyde SOFA & CHAIR recovered In Grade A Naugahyde Low as $145,00 AS LOW AS Rocking Chairs Recovered With Grade A Naugahyde 49 East Main St. Phone SK6-2776 American Fork or FR3-3737 Ripe For the Picking B TAYLOR Press Assn. But Nelson did not throw it in there. Oh no! It just blew off as he was leaving the White Houee after break fast the other day - and that's where it landed. Four hours later, after his return to New York, he just happened to have a 2,700 word statement ready for the reporters re-porters on what-this-country-needs or, in a word, Rockefeller. Rocke-feller. That the country did not need Nixon was made em-Dhatically em-Dhatically clear. "A new period now begins," quote the Rockefeller explan-tion explan-tion of why he is being forced into the Presidency. "It summons sum-mons new men. New problems demand new ideas, new actions." ac-tions." His idea of "new actions" ac-tions" apparently included such items as Federal aid to education, socialized medicine, labor reform and doing something some-thing for the "low-income farmers". The "new men", we presume, he will supply. Others of his new ideas consisted con-sisted of re-reorganizing the Pentagon, more spending for "immediate defense needs," a "revision of tax policies to encourage en-courage investment" and (where have we heard this before?) be-fore?) reorganizing the Government. Gov-ernment. He didn't mention the outsize national debt or recovering re-covering our international trade balance, but thinks our economy must grow faster. Best of all, we thought was his peroration: "The path of great leader ship does not lie along the top of a fence. "It climbs heights. "It speaks truths. "The people want and need one thing above all others: a leadership of clear purpose, candidly proclaimed." We have heard no more eloquent elo-quent endorsement of Senator Barry Goldwater. Can anyone, n o mater how filled with sweetness sweet-ness and light claim that the human race is composed of rational human beings? -One wonders what is to be gained by further ties of any kind or discription with the Communist world. Can any good come of talking, of summit, sum-mit, semi-summit or semi-demi-summits where Russia is concerned? Why don't we acknowledge ack-nowledge that, being a civilized civiliz-ed naMon, we cannot cope with savages, who use every offer of friendship to cut our throats. Why don't we give up the ridiculous ri-diculous struggle and get to work with sober determiation to shore up our falling prestige in the world and get with the business of being the greatest nation in the world-even the Russians admit that-and recapture recap-ture and HOLD our place as the leader of the free world while there is still a free world to lead? If we had no contact wi'h the Russians there would be no opportunity for them to make a mockery of us before the world. And, Jt seems to me, that we should now highly resolve to stay home and tend our knitt ing. These lovely frirjs of friendship were begun by the Russlans-as they begin every- thing-for the very purpose of eventually backing Uncle Sam In to a corner and giving his beard a yank. And they've done it way off in far away Jaoan! Japan, our friends and ally! And there's Cuba. And with all this, what is! the U. S. Senate up to today? They're investigating the "rottenness" "rot-tenness" in the field of boxing! box-ing! The wonder is that we survive at all. There's one clear bugle call in all this noise. G. Romney of General Motors got up in a meeting and said thaat Amer ica s insistence on new car models every year is ridiculous and cynical! Hallelujah! Can't we "draft" that one for presi dent? Although drafting men for president is a doubtful compliment these days. Comes closer to being a death war rant than it should. For what it's worth, I'm very proud of George Romney, a local boy who has centainly made good and his courage in saying what he did proves it. I'm for Ezra Taft Benson, too. I may not agree with him, but any man who will hew to the line as he has done in this day of uncertainty, uncer-tainty, vacillation and general confusion of moral issues it to be commended and encouraged. encourag-ed. He's a collector's item, a museum piece that is becoming becom-ing more rae, more precious every day. When such men are gone, along with the George Romneys, what then? 'Bye, now.
