Show OREM-GBNEVA TOO THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1953 Last week I visited a Provo mortuary to pay my last humble respect: to two of my former students whose lives were snuffed snuff-ed out by the maniacal driving of an imcompetent motorist. Lloyd and Louise Baum, '.wo outstanding young married peop'e we-e driving along in the family car at apparestly moderate speed when they were hit and killed b. a car traveling on the wrong side of the road. Their three beautiful children were orphaned by the crash. It will be interesting to all who live in Utah Valley, and especially espec-ially to the friends of the deceasa-ed, deceasa-ed, to learn what eventually happens hap-pens to the driver of the death car. Of course, no punishment that the court can impose can bring hack the lives of the two young people. No penalty, regardless of if avpHtv fan nseii&tfA 4h vrlat nor replace the parental love and care lost by the three orphans. All that could be accomplished by the swift and adequate punishment punish-ment meted out to those who comit manslaughter on our highways, high-ways, would be to see to it that the drivers never operate a motor T.V. The legislature is now in session; ses-sion; but so far nothing has been done about our inadequate traffic laws nor the penalties proviided for their infraction. Our traffic regulations and our highways are woefully behind the speed of the modern car, Greater Utah Valley, Inc. extends ex-tends sincerest sympathy to the parents and children of Lloyd and Louise Baum. We fervently pray that our lawmakers now in session, will come up with at least a partial solution to our urgent traffic fatality problem. LHS CAMPUS CHATTER By Janet Wilkinson As you read this column Lin coln and Ogden debaters are del ivering their final rebuttals on the North Atlantic Treaty organ ization federalization question. The debate today was arranged by Lincoln debate manager Alta Johnson to provide both the Lincoln Lin-coln and Ogden debaters with practical experience for the coming com-ing contests. Lincoln debaters are slated to journey to Ogden on February 17 for a return bout with their Ogden opponents in the Ogden tournament Other debate events scheduled for the near future include the Weber meet on Feb. 27-28 and the region re-gion contest in March. We arrived late at Scera the other night and were enjoying the peace and quiet of the inter mission. All of a sudden a trum pet blared forth, the sound of marching feet was heard and some characters that defy all ' es se ription appeared on the scene. After we had recovered suffi ciently from the first surprise, we surreptitiously stole another glance at the noisy invaders of our solitude. Could those ill-fitting, outlan dish uniforms really belong to members of the LHS band? Ev eryone had seen the Lincoln band parade grandly down Provo's University Avenue in practically every Fourth of July celebration that ever was, hobnob with all the elite, smartly dressed high school musicians of this area, and present community concerts in style, but never before (and we M npHERE'S a big story in the price of this JL beauty b: an even bigger one in what you get fo that price. We all found out later that ap- j pearing in their old uniforms was just the band's way. of showing show-ing the people of Orem how badly they need new uniforms to replace the ones purchased 12 years ago. The band has already raised over $2,000 of the $3,000 needed, to outfit the 60 band members lie in attending the Scera band with new gold colored costumes. The response shown by the pub-benefit pub-benefit showing of the "Stars and Stripes Forever" was encouraging encou-raging but there is still a large amount to be collected. Let's pledge our continued support to the Lincoln High band. The United States Air Force , isn't the only group working to protect our nation's airways as imany people have supposed. Take it from Cadet Pat Jones! the only girl member of Lincoln squadron of the Civilian Air Patrol. Pa-trol. The CAP is the civilian auxiliary au-xiliary to the Air Force and assists as-sists in such special flying missions mis-sions as searching for missing persons and "operation haylift" which was enacted in 1947 to feed snow stranded cattle and sheep in Utah's otherwise inacc-essable inacc-essable esert areas. All CAP work Is done on a purely voluntary basis, with each individual paying his own expenses. Exceptions to this occur oc-cur on special missions when the federal government defrays the cost incurred by the CAP. Although most of the Lincoln cadets haven't as yet had the opportunity of taking part in actual ac-tual CAP special missions, many have acquired the know-how and skill necessary for future flying assingments. Keep up the work, Lincoln cadets. You may very well render an valuable service to your community and your nation, na-tion, in the near future.
