Games, refreshments re-freshments and prizes were enjoyed en-joyed by the guests. While serving as the princi pal of one of Utah Valley's high schools an incident occurred that has never been forgotten, although it happened many years go. A boy, who had previously at tended high school in one of the New England states, was called to the office for disobedience disobed-ience of one of the rules of the school. When asked about the misconduct he said, "I'm sorry sir, I'll see that it doesn't hap pen again." Just previously, a native son of Utah had been reminded of his infraction of the same reg ulation and his reply was, "Oh yeah, why don't you get the others oth-ers that are doing it?" From all outward appearances these boys were about equal, but the Eastern lad carried with him a certain culture and polish that will help him along many a thorny path and around many a disagreeable obstacle. One needs only to observe the every day behavior of some of our adults and teen agers, to learn that common courtesy is sorely lacking in their personal ities. The words "If you please." "Thank you," and 'I beg your pardon" are almost foreign to their vocabularies. Perhaps this general dsregard for common courtesy in our re lations with others has been a contributing cause to our dis graceful automobile accident record. It is not that we do not know how to drive, nor that we do not understand the traffic rules; it is simply because we have ceas ed to care about the rights and feelings of others- . A day or so ago, I approached a no-stop intersection at the exact ex-act time that another car was approaching ap-proaching from my right. The driver of this car clearly had the right of way; and yet he stopped and signaled me to pro ceed, I do not know this drivers driv-ers name, but his act of consideration consid-eration was so unusual that I shall never forget him. Safe driving can become an accomplished fact, only by a conscious effort on the part of verv car owner and operator. Would that we could always remember, re-member, that we will never get where we are going' if we are dead before we get there.
