Home Agent Lists Hints for Xmas Safety By Jennier J. Poulson, Home Demonstration Agent The Christmas tree often gets the blame for fires caused by hazardous trimmings, trash or, carelessness. Arthur M. Sowler, . extension forester of the U. S. ; Dept. of Agriculture states it is ( difficult to burn a iresn moisi Christmas tree. An easy way to test for freshness fresh-ness before buying is to tnake the tree to see if any needles fall. If so, the tree is dry and will soon lose its looks and be come a nuisance in the home, A fresh, tree that gets water will keep its color and fragrance frag-rance and look alive. Do the fol- owing to keep the tree fresh, 1. As soon as the tree is brought home, throw cold water all over it. 2. Then cut off the butt end about an inch slantwise to open the pores for drawing up water. 3. Set the freshly cut ?nd promptly in water. 4. Keep the tree in a cool shady place until it comes in doors for trimming. 5. To hold the tree in water, a crosswise rack may be fitted over a- pail or other container, concealed by covering witn aluminum al-uminum foil. Small stones or brick pieces in the container give weight and support so the tree won't topple. 6, Replenish water daily, because be-cause a 5 or 6 foot tree may take up as much as a cup a day 7. Set the tree away from radiator, rad-iator, stove, fireplace, hot light bulbs, radio or television. Design for Peace of Mind ...
