Show THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 1950 OREM-GENEVA TIMES Orchard Tour Big Success The officers of the Society appreciate the efforts of all who helped make a big success of the annual orchard tour on August Aug-ust third and fourth- On the third, Dr. S. W. Edgecomb and his staff conducted a tour over the Tree Fruit Experiment Station Sta-tion at north Ogden during the forenoon. In the afternoon, Dr. B. L. Richards conducted the tour through the virus disease station at north Farmington. On the fourth, the tour was conducted through orchards of Utah County where Joel Barlow, Bar-low, assistant County Agent, had some interesting and educational educa-tional things for all to see. Peach Varieties Being Tested On the station farm there are 35 different varieties of peaches being tested. The spring frost this year interferred with the tests, but trees are at an age now which will permit a good check en fruit quality and time of ripening next year if the weather weath-er will cooperate. This variety test is one of the most valuable things being done at the station as far as commer-rial commer-rial peach growers are concerned. concern-ed. Many new varieties are be-ing be-ing introduced each year. Growers Grow-ers can not hope to test them all, but they can visit the station stat-ion and pick up the ones which seem to offer promise for their spec'al conditions. In this way, Utah- growers can keep up with the new developments without fiDirintf trt nrnntirp fhp trial And - - i error method on their own farms. Four types of pruning prun-ing are under observation. They range from little pruning at all to extremely heavy pruning. While the experiment is only in its third year, some interesting results are being noted, ine trees receiving practically no pruning produce the heaviest crops, while the trees receiving the heaviest pruning produce the liehtest croDS. When the size of fruit is considered, the heavily pruned trees produce :he largest peaches. At the pres tnt time indications are that a rather moderate pruning will produce the best results tor commercial growers. Some interesting in-teresting results are beginning to appear. No pruning at planting plant-ing time is producing better branching of cherry trees than pruning- But it is far too early in the experiment to make any statement as to the best way to treat young cherry trees, Dr. Edgecomb told the group. It is worth your time to watch these cherry trees, though. Fifteen or 20 varieties of apricots ap-ricots are being tested at the station. If you are interested in apricots, you will want to see these next spring and summer.
