E. Kartchner Jr., retired farmer and long-time resident of Orem, was elected president of the Orem Cham ber ot Commerce at a meeting of the Chamber board of directors dir-ectors held Tuesday at the city hall. Mr. Kartchner was appointed ap-pointed to the board after the resignation of Joseph T. Smith was accepted both as chamber president and board member. Johnson, second vice president; Thomas Reese, treasurer; and Mrs. E. H. Johnson, John-son, secretary. Directors' for 1950, besides the officers named, include Grant Ekins, Ray Loveless, J. George Stratton. Fred S. Davies and Bill Baker. Outlined at the meeting were plans for a membership drive designed to enlist every Orem businessman in the chamber. A contest will be staged between the north and south sections of the city with the winners being honored at a general membership member-ship meeting set for February 17. The board voted to begin the membership drive immediately in order that a record membership member-ship might be obtained before the February 17 deadline. The board also voted to undertake und-ertake a program for the coming year designed to promote Orem as a shopping center by retain ing present stores and encouraging encour-aging new businesses. The new chamber president has been a resident of Orem since 1894. He is Orem's representative repres-entative of the Produce Marketing Market-ing Association. The council voted to allow Sam Kitchen to trade one and one-half shares of Provo Bench water for six shares of city-owned city-owned Provo Reservoir water, the one and one-half shares to be used on the city park for 1950. The balance of three and three- quarters shares of cfity-owned water was approved for rental to B. M. Jolley.
