"IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY" CLUB WB HAMB To 60 OA l ", a a a a ' Utah Wages Show Hike for 1949 Second Quarter An increase of nearly $7,000,- 000 in Utah payrolls for the sec ond quarter of 1949 was revealed reveal-ed in estimates released this week bv the Utah department of employment security ,The in crease is in comparison witn tne same period a year ago. The increase came despite a slight decline in employment. Payroll figures for workers covered by unemployment insurance insur-ance are listed at $84,324,000 for the second quarter of 1949. Figure Fig-ure for the same period a year ago was $77,451,000. Wages of workers also reflected reflect-ed a gain, with the average monthly wage for the past quarter quar-ter estimated at $228 compared with $212 a year ago. Total employment numbered 126,000 covered workers during the past quarter, for a decrease of approximately 1841 under a year ago. The employment figure, fig-ure, however, represents a gain of more than 7000 over the first quarter of this year. A breakdown of covered workers on a monthly basis for the quarter ended Aug. 31, 1949, follows: April, 121,000; May, 123,00; and June, 126,000. Figures for the same quarter a year ago were: April, 114,848; May, 123,777, and June 127,841. State of Flux With labor conditions in a state of flux, soaring high in some lines and downward in others, the state department of employment security previously did not release employment figures fig-ures for July and August. Publication Pub-lication of figures was delayed in an effort to obtain more accurate accur-ate checks on the labor market, it was explained. Migration of out of-state workers work-ers has been at a high volume during the summer months, with a majority coming from the depressed de-pressed areas on the Pacific Coast. The high percentage of transient job seekers contributed contribut-ed to high numbers of job applicants appli-cants and unemployment compensation com-pensation recipients, officials noted.
