In fact it was just a little old secondary sec-ondary road a little off the beaten beat-en path. It wasn't much to look at because age, neglect, and an improper start in life had brought broug-ht it to a sorry state. It was born a cripple, twisted and without much planned attention it just came into being. It was allowed to grow and develop with just the bare necessities to keep it open. This road wound around, sort of aimlessly, as though uncertain un-certain of its destination. It was a bumpy old road, filled with chuck holes and ruts. Its surface was seamed and worn by the erosion of the winter rains, while vagrant-- rocks protruded here and there to mar its smoothness. smooth-ness. It wasn't like some of its more fortunate relatives who had had a face lifting in the modern manner in the spring. No massive road machinery had been made available for its treatment. For some reason It had been overlooked. It boasted no new black top, and it had not even been given a facial of crude oil. Temporarily Improved 1 Scrapers had been run across its surface rather hurriedly to hide its worst blemishes, but this treatment was of only temporary tem-porary value and was no panacea pana-cea for its ills. The effects of this superficial treatment soon wore off and it was left helpless help-less to withstand the load of traffic which coursed across it and the effects of the rains which drenched it on occasion.! As a result of this lack of attention atten-tion it built up a thick coating of dust, which not only covered ( us sunace, dui wnicn also pow-' dered the country-side which' held it. This fine sand filtered into the smallest nooks and cran-l nies of the homes which dotted! UL LliC i uau, a. Ilia, lu the dismay and distress of the unfortunate people who are forced for-ced to live along its route. The vehicles of the travelers who venture on its course in dry weather raise clouds of dust which serve to obstruct their vision and to tickle, rather unpleasantly, un-pleasantly, the sinuses of the sensitive. In wet weather it becomes slippery and sodden and clutches at the wheels of the vehicles of the motorists who are forced to use it. The people who use this road only do so out of sheer necessity, and they tonstaantlv complain and berate it, even though, to the best of its ability it is serving them well. After all, as some people reason, it is only a secondary road, and as such cannot hope to enjoy the attention and maintenance nf tho better highways. Very Important Road But, do you know, .this little secondary road is an important little road. It is the kind of road that provides an outlet to the farmers and ranchers for their produce. It is a means of getting their crops to the market. It is a life line through whose arteries arter-ies flows the produce which feeds our cities and towns. It is a vital link between the farmer who produces the crop and the hungry consumer who depends upon it. These little secondary roads are as capillaries to the OUTDOOR GIRL -r v - - The typical American outdoor girl, Esther Williams, MUM star, wears a cool, cotton-fresh outfit for a summer outing.
