I find folks especially grumpy before they have their morning coffee. Of course, being be-ing a waitress at Western Air Lines and working an early morning shift, gives me an Insight In-sight into the minds and hears of people who travel. They hnvc much in common with Orem farmers they are not very good company until after breakfast. break-fast. : ; t : A DIFFICULT CUSTOMER This morning I had a very dif-' ficulty customer. He was tired and hungry and didn't know how to order what he could eat. After fumbling with the menu and cluttering up my time, he said, "It's the durndest thing I don't know what I should have to eat, I'm a diabetic . . . "Then This 'N That ... "I can fix that," I said, "You see I have been making people well for years, find know just what your doctor would allow you." Ho sighed and said, "Fine, go ahead up to $5.00." After he bad gone, I was clearing clear-ing away the dirty dishes and he had left me a 50c tip. Many a time at the U. P. cafe I selected special menus for folks with j many ailments the human race' is heir to. The boss gave me permission and the other wait-j resses would turn over to me their difficult customers. I LIKE THE JOB I like the job of "hashing" I love to make people happy. But to say I will ever be a good waitress is stretching the point a mile. Still there are certain fundamentals as in other jobs that most girls can master and don"t kid yourself that just any average girl will be a good waitress wait-ress with time and training. It requires a certain talent of making mak-ing people happy and comfortable comfor-table a grand disposition that can meet all kinds of people and get along with them. In a nutshell, nut-shell, a waitress should know more psychology than a professor profes-sor the art of conversation the easy flow of give and take banter to which a hasher Is sub- 20 Discount 0 list 1 CW? wof.fi jected keeping in good with iiie bosses making the kitchen force happy and smooth-running. It is a waitress who is the main wheel of any cafe or coffee shop. WHAT IS A GOOD WAITRESS? N I asked the pilot of the great Western Plane." He said, She is a glamour gal, plus she is neat and clean, considerate, consider-ate, smart, has a sense of humor, can act and think quicker than lightening. She is good at more tilings than any other professional profes-sional gal in all history and more indispensable than your mother, wife, or best girl." , Fi to the pilot I'll ask the best lady cook in existence. She is strictly "wheet whoo. . , " at Western Air Lines. IMA SAYS "A good waitress shouia be fresh and clean, read her menu when coming on shift so she will know exactly what she is serving serv-ing her public. She must give her orders correctly to the cook so he can get them back as soon as possible. Cooks are temperamental" tempera-mental" (of course they are, Ima, they are artists) "and have a right to a certain amount of temperament," Then Ima con tinued, "A good waitress never leans her elbows on the counter and gazes into the eyes of the customers" (OH, NO) "be courteous court-eous and business-like customers custom-ers like service. . . . " ROSIE IS THE BEST HASHER . ..RoiU.. makes., the most trips, and loves her Job... She ays, "I wouldn't trade jobs with any other gal I know.".. Sure. I'm a trained nurse, a '38 graduate of L.D.S.
