The current issue of Engineering Engin-eering News contains an extended extend-ed editorial calling attention to what, in its opinion, is a serious blunder on the part of the government gov-ernment in fixing the speed of the nev battleships at 16 or 10 knots. According to the same authority all the other naval powers have increased their standard of speed for (his class of boats to fioni 17 to 19 knots, and thero are now at least fifty foreign battleships, afloat or in process of construct ion, which have from one to three knots the advantage of our best ships of Ihe same rating. The News contends that if at this time the United States builds battleships with less speed . than some of its battleships have which are alreony afloat, it will injure our naval prestige as much as the loss of a battle. Tho subject is being discussed by nearly all the leading papers of the country, coun-try, and, almost without exception, excep-tion, they are with the News. So far as it has found expression public opinion demands the construction con-struction and maintenance of a fleet in full keeping with our standing as a nation, and that means every boat in it must be as good as the best. The building build-ing of such a flet, however, will have to be left to the ofHcers who have been educated by the government for the purpose, and, if the splendid accomplishment accomplish-ment of tho boats we now have may be taken us a criterion, they are fully equal to the task. , Minnesota has been enjoying tho benefits of a pure food law for tho pnst 6ix months and the A 9fc i e5K r? tSL ...
