All winter she had looked from the West Pointer in the cadet cap, to the militiaman with the soft broad brimmed hat pulled over his eyes, ami from these to the hoy in the sailor's uniform of the naval reserves. They all loved her, but she did not know, she could not tell, which (die she liked best. Then the war came, and she was obliged 'to bid them each Rood by. She meant to give each one a keepsake. "For 1 want them all to rotiietuber me," she mused. "Was ever a girl so unfortunate? Three of them, and an soldiers! If 1 only knew which I liked best!" And the time came to bid the first i;ood by. 'I shall think of you as I wear it, always," said the West. Pointer, pinning pin-ning the tiny favor in his cap jauntily. jaunt-ily. "If I am killed, it will be sent back to you with my dying words." lie took her hauds in both of his. "And you promise to rc member me you will write to mo very often?" The tears brimmed in the girl's Kray eyes, and she promised. Then the West Pointer was called away. Clatter of sword and glist of spur. And the time came to tell the second one good by. ' I shall wear it and think or you every day," said the militiaman, pin ning the tiny favor above his heart, i to the lining to his uniform. Then he unclasped his sharpshooter's medal and handed it to her. "Will you promise to wear this for me?" The tears 'brimmed in the girl's 'ycs as she fastened the medal to her little new army jacket. "I feel too dirty In touch sue! a bit "f thing. And lev Hut Ins are so dirty that I hate .. ;:sk you to pin it in my cap.'' He was indeed dirty and unshaven, grimy ;th the unsavory un-savory grime of new and oily ropes, and his white workins clothes vveie I past all description, muddva-ic paint daubed ar.d tar sMif-an-d. Hut the yirl reached up, and he leaned down a great deal, and sli-' fastened the littl" favor in his cap. The rain fell drearily and the raw east wind blew in gusts across the desolate navy yard, and the irival i'ii:is of t ho cruiser near them looked on privily from the long, t'ray hull. On board the ship six men in dirty white uniforms stood at attention he-iide the force tstle gun; six men against the grim, grav sky. "l'ra-la-la: tra-la-la!" sate: bugle. "You'll have to excuse me, the reserve hastilv. ''They're the ' said guing t i give out the vv:' dies. I'm awfully ashamed you saw me. in this plight, but I've been rigging all day " "It's so dreary," murmured the girl, shivering :k the raw wind swept her face. "Tin-re's no glitter, there's no triumph or anything!" "Wait t ill we get into action." he laughed, "and show our teeth." Fie was starling to run back to the ship, but she caught the grimy coat sleeve and held him back. "You you haven't promised to remember me," she cried, with a little soh. "Of course I will! Don't stop me, for goodness' sake!'1 he cried, springing spring-ing to the gangplank. Then a little whistle sounded and three hundred dirty white uniforms were shullled as by magic into groups at attention. The girl looked at them a moment, and then her eyes fell on a tiny hit of color lying in the mud. She went jver and pickod it up, and the tears of grief and mortification blinded her deep gray eyes. It was her favor. She made her way slowly through the loveless old navy yard, past the cap-tuied cap-tuied British guns, past the still guard at the gate, and slowly, slowly, farther on through the cheerless, pitying enfolding rain. She had forgotten for-gotten the West Pointer and the militiaman. "lie didn't even ask me to remember remem-ber him." she thought brokenly. As if it were necessary!
