The Hungerford academy gave an entertainment and exhibition for the friends and patrons of the school last Friday afternoon, showing the woik being done by Its pupils. The work has been on exhibition all this week at the academy. The examination papers, copy hooks, drawing books and the books of the book-keeping class all show the marks of careful and efficient work. Ice Cream, opposite the city hall, at Whitehead's. The patriotic women of Utah are getting up a fund with which to purchase pur-chase a flag for Utah's company of Col. Torrey's Rough Riders. Only one dollar will lie accepted from any town, and only five cents from any one woman. H. M. Doiigall is authorized author-ized to take the contributions of the Springville ladies, and ladies who wish to donate to the fund would do well to call upon him at once before the list is made up. Mrs. Maria Rastin Harrington, wife of John C. Harrington of this city, died at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning of heart disease after a severe illnecs j or only five days. Sh had oeen in fair health for several months but was not taken violently sick until last Friday. Mrs. Harrington was born August 11, 1852, at Mineral Point, Davis county, Illinois, and was 46 years of age. She was the mother of six children, t hree of whom arc now living. The funeral took place yester day afternoon from the family residence resi-dence at 2 o'clock. Jas. E. Hall and L. D. Crandall were the speakers. A large number of relatives and friends were present and followed the remains re-mains to their last resting place in the city cemetery. S. P. C. The graduating exercises of the Hungerford academy were held in the Presbyterian chapel last Thursday evening. Although the pouring rain prevented scores of people from attending who had planned to be there, the program was carried out exactly as announced last week. The music was good, the addresses of Dr. McNiere and Rev. Paterson were replete with sound advice for both parent and pupil, while the graduates acquitted themselves with credit. They go out from Hungerford to pursue pur-sue their studies elsewhere assured that the best.wishes of their teachers and fellow students follow them. Success to the class of '98. Pleasant, conveying the Information that the directors of the Commercial and Savings Bank of that city had voted to present Joseph Allen of this city with $50 as a token of esteem for his bravery iu his battle with the Springville bank robbers. Friday afternoon the Springville bank received a draft from the Mt. Pleas ant bank, with the following letter: Mt. Plkasant, Utah, I June 3, 1898. 1 Springville Ranking Co., Springville, Utah. Gentlemen: We herewith enclose draft of $50 favor of Joseph Allen as our appreciation of his bravery in the capturing of the desperadoes who robbed your bank. Of the many pleasant social gatherings gather-ings held in the Presbyterian chapel in the past, uone have surpassed that of Tuesday evening, the occasion occa-sion being a reception tendered to Rev. E. G. Paterson and his bride. Besides the members of the congregation, congre-gation, a large number of represent ative citizens were present, all joining join-ing cordially in the greetings. A few selections of music were given, and a very warm welcome was extended ex-tended to the pastor and his wife by the Rev. Jos. Wilks of Provo. who who welcomed him as a Christian worker and neighbor. Mayor Hall then followed with a few well timed remarks, welcoming him as a citizen, to which Mr. Paterson gave a fitting response. Light refreshments were served and all expressed themselves as having spent a delightful evening. The Cuban question and political issues sink into insignificance with the man who suffers from piles. Peterson's, Last week Dr. Smart and Mrs. Lizzie Chamberlain entertained a party of about twenty friends at the Provo Lake resort, ou the occasion of the launching of the doctor's new cruiser. All the usual formalities were indulged in, and the day was very enjoyably spent. The Stuttz Theatre company is still giving nightly performances and drawing good crowds to their tent-opera tent-opera bouse. Last Thursday night they gave no performance on account of the rain. Friday night the play presented was "The Embassy Ball," Saturday night "Charley's Aunt." A benefit was tendered Joseph W. Allen on Monday evening, giving him 50 per cent of $60, the gross rccei pts. They presented "The Burglar." Tuesday night, "Woman's Bitter Atonement" was given, and Wednesday night the play "Ten Nights In a Barroom," last night "East Lynne." Tonight they play "The Bastile" and tomorrow night "Uncle Tom's Cabin." A matinee mati-nee will be tiven Saturday afternoon. m with ' Little Nell'' on the stage. The Stuttz company is a strong one and gives good satisfaction. Nothing further fur-ther need be said than that their tent is filled at every performance, or an average attendance of about 800.
