This society can be made a great benefit for the community. List week the Pay son Globe completed its fifth year, and tarts on the sixt h imuh encouraged. encour-aged. May the Globe's shape never be marred. Editor Ileyfort of the Sandy Independent was delirous with joy last week over the arrival of a 12 pouud newspaper in mi at his home. We congratulate Brother Harford on his sutis-fttcLiry sutis-fttcLiry beginning. Close upon 1000 acres of sugar beets will be raised in th vicinity vicin-ity of Mapletoit and this city. With a good beat year the wheels of commerce in this city will be lubricated by n whole lot of money next winter. The Lexowing committee who would nlrip the senatorial toga from Marcus Auriferous llauna eem to be making no particular headway, ilanna, had he been asked, could have told them as much before thev commenced. The Provo Uttnian, ns a triweekly, tri-weekly, has ceased to exist, but The Utouian as a 10-page weekly week-ly of a superior sort is promised in lieu thereof, the first iisue to appear next Saturday. We wish The Utoniau success in its new venture. Last' week' Deal Bros. & Men-denhall Men-denhall placed in the hands of the local bishops twenty tons of coal, to be placed where it would do the most good in Boftening the rigors of the cold snap, We will bet that this kind or Christianity Chris-tianity counts up faster in the books of Heaven than would the erection of a meeting house. Lord Kelvin, an English scientist, says that at the present pres-ent rate of consumption the supply sup-ply of oxygen will only last 100,000 years. Very startling, truly. Just what Lord Kelvin would like us to do about it is not plain. At the same lime, the problem is largely one of futures, and will concern people who live 190.190 years from now a great deal more than it does us. mm v. " V OIUVV mu UtTllC- i l ,m ...... ' tiviai cun-i. oi uiscipime in t lie public schools was to be noted, when the pupils in a burning school building at Salt Lake quietly formed in line and quietly marched out to the beat of the drum. There is food for thought in this. Any training that will make people cool headed and able to keep their wits about them in times of excitement excite-ment should be encouraged. It would many times be the means of saving life, Chicago speculators are shov. iug the price of wheat skyward. That's all right for the farmer who has a couple of hundred bushels of surplus wheat, but it isn't good news to we poor sinners sin-ners who have to buy flour. If The Independent has a subscriber sub-scriber who, has 300 bushels of wheat to. sell at fancy prices, we wish lie would come around to this office and subscribe for a couple of extra copies, in order to even matters up a bit. We further wish there were about evenly-five such folks. UliVlVE TU EM AG MX. Daring (lie last frv years h number of popular movrinentj' luive been set on foot in Spring ville towards t!ie securing ol certain institutions which could not but have been of benefit to! the city and her people, but they have neurly all been permitted to full into oblivion. Continual agitation and pushing is the ouly way to success, and the effort should not be ullowed to slacken fur a moment. All these things ure just as good propositions at they ever were, and Aould now be butter than ever. Let us review them again and do some more ugitaling: One of the institutions nr-gently nr-gently needed here is uu Opera House, to take the place of the one burned a number of years. since. There is no place in town where a large public assembly could be accommodated with comfort. Tlie City hall is not large enough to attract a first-class theatrical company, and its stage and scenery are of such a nature that the companies which do come are unable to do their best. Some time after the old Opera House burned a more was made to build a new one, but for some reason it failed. Plans for a commodious and model building were prepared, and now repose in the archives of Dr. Peterson's drug store. The Doctor gets them out once in a while for the benefit of inquiring in-quiring citizens, and then files them away again with a faraway far-away look in his eyes, ai he thinks of tho time when they may possibly be needed. The need of the Opera House is now greater than it ever was, and the plans are all ready and a? good as they ever were. People once subscribed freely and generously gen-erously in labor toward the construction con-struction of a building, and would no doubt do so again if they got a chance and anything seemed likely to come of it. Assistance will then be forthcoming. forth-coming. Let the Opera House project be revived again. At a later date it was proposed pro-posed to have the Oregon Short Line build a spur up from the marshes and give this city better bet-ter service. Citizens pushed the matter for a while, but for some reason nothing came of it ex-cept ex-cept to cause the Rio Grande Western to improve its facilities a little. The shipping business here is on the increase, and we want the Short Line up near town as badly a over. It ought to have a depot near town instead in-stead of a platform down in the marshes. Let the Short Line spur project pro-ject be revived again. Still more recently the citizen citi-zen s here had a desire for that thoroughly modem, up-to-date and economical institution, an electric light plant, to be owned and operated by the municipality. municipal-ity. Th is was pushed through to a fairly satisfactory conclusion, the only thing remaining to be done being to hold a special election to secure the consent of the property holders for the issuance of bonds to meet l ho i expense to be incurred The City Council has this in charge, and it will probably be acted upon this coming spring. Don't let it fail by refusing to vote the bonus. Another project which would work wonders for the city and probably be of more benefit than all others put together, was that of building a beet sugar factory here. It was agitated and pushed by the local branch of the American Amer-ican Beet Sugar Growers' Society. The society is still in existence, though the factory idea isn't making much noise at present. A meeting of the society for the election of oflicers will take place next Saturday, and nothing noth-ing need prevent the beet raisers from attending. It is now too late to make a move looking to the erection of a factory for operation next fall, but there is ample time for one for the next year. Beet raisers should see to it I lowyuu Syrup. It may be asked why, when so many citizens were in favor of building an Opera House and willing to assist, some one did not take the matter in hand and go on with the woik: It was for the reason, possibly, that what is everybody' .business is nobody's business. Then again, the men who worked on plans and talked the matter up have private business interests which tney of course could not neglect. There are men here who, we believe, be-lieve, have the time and money to devote to, such an enterprise, but seem to lack the inclination. It is only by continually agitating agi-tating these matters that we can keep them fresh in the public mind and eventually attract the attention of men who may be disposed to exert themselves in such affairs. "And when his blackened soul goes down to the bottomless pit, where it Justly belongs, all hell will shudder at the intrusion: and the very imps of darkness will draw aside their reeking reek-ing rbe le-a they might be polluted by the infectious touch of the low, depraved, degraded wretch." That's what a lawyer said about a man in court down at Filmore recently. If common people should refer to one-another one-another in that style all kinds of things might be expected to happen. If an editor were to r e 1 6 r t o - a in i n ' ' ? tit js e t e r i one court would n t hold the libel suit; and a smalljigar box would probably hold althat was mortal of that editorvhen the man got through withHm.
