It is one of U'rfh's best journals TheOjjilen Standard is twenty-eight twenty-eight years old, which causes the Rich field Advocate to remark re-mark ihut it hopes its career of usefulness ii just beginning. The Standard ceilainly ought to brace up now if it ever intend to do so. Editor Scott of the Rural Press has returned from his vacation in Montana, nnd is busy explaining how his ' subs" flopped the sheet's policy during his ubsence. Mr. Scott should have furnished his crew with a ili.tnun of ; the policy of the l'ress, with the investiture of brief authority. In the selection of F. C. Gem-n.ifll Gem-n.ifll the Democratic pmly of Springville secured a good man fur the marshal-hip. He is very comeitnlious in the perfoi manee of his duties, nnd will no doubt lnve an interesting two years term, as we understand that a special effort is to be made to enforce the liquor ordinunco lo the very letter. The Independent man is in receipt of nu offer from an East ern seedsman of $1.80 worth of flower or vegetable seeds in payment pay-ment for about $3 worth of ad- . 1 1 e i verusing space. we have no doubt but that every editor in , the Stato received the same jroposition, and will note with interest those who accent this magnificent offer. The Independent Inde-pendent man has an ideal farm which he (m imagination, of course) "conducts on a very dubornte and expemive scale, but in his wildest llights of fancy never detected himself buying seeds nt such exorbitant prices. That portion of The Inde-pendent' Inde-pendent' constituency which use9 this ofliee as a freo reading room has been perusing this week a little story entitled "Diamond "Dia-mond Dick, Jr.'s Arsenal," or "A Surprise Party at Ft. Wade." They say it is a thrilling tale, which ere(ully avoids adorning itself with n moral, and pronounce pro-nounce it u wtleomo relief from the religious literature kept on tap usually. Lest the Diamond Dick btsle of literature become too popular, this office will pro. vide no more of it. Even Marshall, Mar-shall, the theological crank, was noticed reading it in a secluded part of the shop. Durrant was hung finally, and is now probably good and dead. Theie exists in the minds of a great many people a doubt as lo his guilt, and it seems to us that it would have been better if he had been sent to Stales prison for life, pending further devel-opemenfs. devel-opemenfs. Then in the eTnt of the discovery of certaiu evidence on which to convict another party or parties, Durrant could bo liberated. As it is, Durrant lias suffered the penalty, whether justly or unjustly. The tnking of life by law as a penalty for crime is n serious matter, and there should, it seems to us, be absolutely no doubt iu such n case. KKL'i'i.u rr A, !ll lilt U'.lsilif Si IIS rei ha in the s cial nuiUuvs il.e Naiionul Stockman nnd Farmer, ujii-ear-juices count f ir much. It is passible that they count for too much sometime, ami Unit real 111 i merit is Jessed by for Something less worthy that makes n better show. But this is 'Mho way of the world," nnd as we cannot change we should take advantage advan-tage of it. A breeder of live stock Ailhout proper rtutionery, business cards, etc., would not be as favorably regarded ns one who is up to date in all of these little things. A breeder whose stock does not show its real worth because it. is not iu con-diiion con-diiion cannot dispose of it to best udvautuga. In ,V1 kinds of m.uke'able produce appearance counts fill- dollars nnd cents. 1 liee things urt well understood. under-stood. But thin mailer might bs carried, further. The farm's appearance has n certain influence, in-fluence, though it may net be reckoned wholly in money. A well kept farm, a beautiful and comfortable if not costly home, is a source of pride lo the farmer and his family; and the love for t lit i r home may form a bond between be-tween them which is never broken. But what of the appearance ap-pearance of the farmer? Here we touch a delicate question though mi important one. To t certain extent ft man's appear anco determines bis standing with those who have no ether way of judging him. The man who "don't care how he looks" is unquestionably at some, dis Advantagu in any part of the business world where he is not known, and at a serious disad vantage iu society. Many far mers are needlessly careless in their personal appearance, and such should realize that it is liable to count gainst them in business and soeiety, where one's position is of the greatest im portance. There is no need1 of extravagance, or any attempt to keep up with the styles; but there is need of greater attention to this important subject of np pearance on the part of many people. Our business men might talk about supporting homo Industry, but some or itiem don't seem to practice it very much themselves. A stranger cm come Into the city aboutoncea month and get from them two or three dollar dol-lar each to have their advertisement printed on a piece of card hoard and stuck arouvid over town, but they wou't spend a cent In advertising in the home newspapers, where their advertisements will be seen. The inouey secured by these traveling ad vertisers is taken out of town, and but very little trf it is spent here. In consequence of this it seems to us as though the newspapers would be Justified in advising the people to go to some other town and spend their money, instead of advising them to patronize the home merchant. Pay-sou Pay-sou Globe. Same here. People always seem to bo looking for some new thing, and often "any old thing' in a new guise catches them. Lnst week a very transparent trans-parent fakir in the shape of an auctioneer showed up here with a lot of third rate staples which any regular business man of Spiingville would have been ashamed to have laying about his back yird, and people fell over themselves in their haste to buy. Rniors, strops, soap, stationery, and other like com modi ties went at fancy price?, and people hastened lo stock U, as it wns'nt definitely known whether they weu'd erer get another chance. If local business busi-ness men would use half the effort these fakirs do in the way of advertising, reliable goods would have a better sale and less money, be where fakes could cutch it. Why are not skates made In sets of three in place of pairs as we see them? This Idea was suggested by witnessing the frantic efforts Of n couple of vounn ladies to descend a hill with only two skates on. The proper application of a third skate would evidently have been an Improvement. Heaver Wade. We used to skate a little our- selves, and it often seemed that three, even, would have leen too few.
