From there, director Paul Mazur-sky Mazur-sky uses a wavering blend of cynicism and sentiment to make his Pint- r u- Jerry takes advantage of all his benefactors. But they love being taken advantage of, and his influence in-fluence (part wisdom, part BS), straightens out the hang-ups of his new friends. Dave Whiteman (Richard Dreyfuss) , who feels guilty about being be-ing a rich hanger manufacturer, hangs out with Jerry's bum friends and eats garbage. His frustrated wife (Bette Midler) fiddles with gurus and meditation, but a little transcendental gobbledy-gook gobbledy-gook from Jerry is enough to put her back in sexual trim. He also transforms the family's sexually confused son (Evan Richards) and near-anorexic daughter (Tracy Nelson). Even the family dog, Matisse, who hates people and sees a psychiatrist, snuggles up to Jerry. None of this turns them into anti-materialists. anti-materialists. They just feel more comfortable about the lap of luxury they're resting in. And Jerry, though he says he craves the independent life, becomes, like Zelig, anything the people around him want. The script and direction aon 1 exactly ex-actly get to the center of what Jerry really is, but Nolte is still appealing. The movie is from Touchstone, the "adult Disney" company, which may explain the strangest joke in the movie. While much of the movie is a satire on wealth, modern neurosis and people boucing up and down in sexual passion, it also allows the dog to steal scenes with constant shots of him staring quizzically quiz-zically at the goings-on. That's the oldest cute-animal bit in the world. RB 9V2 Weeks At any rate, this is the best movie made about a domination-sex relationshiplet's rela-tionshiplet's hope it's the only one. Command someone you love to see it with you! The film's director, Adrian Lyne, is more interested in peeping at his kinky love affair than understanding it. But the movie isn't laden with the paraphernalia you'd expect belts, . whips, leather and golf cleats. Amend that: There is one scene where Mickey Rourke as a young stockbroker is buying a riding crop. Whipping it endlessly, he takes a little lit-tle snap at his girlfriend (Kim Bas-inger) Bas-inger) who accepts it docilely. Rourke's character loves to hint that he could do it, and if he did his woman would accept it. V f Surprise, surprise: Richard Dreyfuss gets a discon answer when he asks his daughter (Trapv Moi.i , . The pair engages in flirtatious flir-tatious foreplay in a department store; he impulsively orders her to shoplift a watch; and he has her sit by the refrigerator with eyes closed, as he shoves food down her throat. Over this long sequence, her mouth becomes a blindly accepting maw. It's meant to be obscenely voluptuous. volup-tuous. If the movie has any saving point, it's that the actors imply worse than they actually show. Rourke is soft and sleazy. Basinger is torn between relishing the weirdness and wondering wonder-ing why she accepts it. Meanwhile, Lyne directs the actors with as much coldness as Rouke directs Basinger. This is a story, he tells us, about : people who don't know each other, except sexually. Using that as an excuse, ex-cuse, the movie does nothing more than sit back and watch. RB Pretty in Pink John Hughes has directed some interesting in-teresting teen films but he seems to be treading familiar ground with this movie, which he wrote and produced. pro-duced. Like his "Sixteen Candles," "Pink" stars Molly Ringwald as a teenager considering a romance with a handsome guy, while a weird, likable shrimp also vies for her attention. Ringwald goes to one of those fie tional high schools that must be planted in a demilitarized zone She's from the poor side of ife tracks, and her thrift-shop clothes are sneered at by the rich kids in the school. When she and a preppy (Andre. McCarthy) are attracted to each other, the romance, arouses resent-ment resent-ment from his snooty friend (James Spader) who struck out win Ringwald; and from her friend Ducky (Jon Cryer) who has bra devoted to her since childhood. The movie hangs together in lam part thanks to Ringwald's perfor mance, which quietly shows hei character's intelligence and implies the emotions she holds in check mosl of the time. And Jon Cryer is lil if a bit hyper. The rest of the film has its problems. pro-blems. Although it tries to detail tin rich-poor rivalry at the school, you don't really believe it. It's even harder to see the chemistry between Ringwald and McCarthy (the latter exercising mainly a laid-back sideways smile), so you don't see why these two should defy the entire social establishment. A couple of other characters are 1 interesting but don't quite gel wit the story Annie Potts as a still eccentric child of the '60s; and Harry Dean Stanton as Ringwald1! hangdog father, still mourning the disappearance of his wife. -RB A Classic Recommended Good double feature material Time-killer For masochists only r K I 1 I s 1 A I I I C Park Meadows Plaza 1500 Kearns Blvd. Park City .
