Because of an injury to another junior Olympic-qualified skier from another area, Cammy Potter will be joining the other PCST members Jacob Doilney, Carter Gregory, Jason Parkin, C.J. Baltz, Ali Salomon, Hilary Felton, Heather Circo, Shannon Brunner and Essie Doilney in the Junior Olympics. At the Snow King Downhill and Super G held March 7 and 9 at Snow King, Wyo., Potter and Jason Lawson each came home with gold medals. Potter won a downhill on Friday by more than two seconds, while her teammate, Michelle Healy, placed ninth. In the other downhill held Friday, Fri-day, Healy finished 11th. On Sunday in the two Super G races, Potter had a third and a fifth, while Healy finished 13th in both races. "Cammy will probably just race in the downhill in the JOs, but it will be good experience for her," Dicius said. "It's been a goal for her all year long to qualify for the JOs and we're glad she did." Erik Johnson was the top Park City racer in the downhill, finishing 23rd and 26th. The team got the gold in the Super G when Lawson won by more than a second. "Jason and Monte Sparby are our only two boys who will race in the J-I Junior Olympics," said Dicius. "They should both do fairly well because they've had a lot of experience ex-perience in the NorAms and the Nationals Na-tionals this year. Monte should do well in the downhill and the Super G and Jason in the Super G and the giant slalom." In a downhill race held March 8-9 at Powder Mountain, the younger members of the Park City team also did well. In the girls races, Cristin Circo finished first both days in the J-V races (10-year-olds and under). Rachel Salomon had a second and a racers none style fo - 1 1 1 3 Hilary Felton till Heather Circo 1 "Jtr Shannon Brunner ninth in the J-IV (10- to 11-year-olds) races and Kayleen Baltz had a third. In the J-III (12- to 13-year-olds) races, Bristol Sorenson had a first and a second. In the boys races, Sam Harris had a second in the J-V class. The J-IV class was dominated by the Park City Ski Team. The top four places were claimed in order by Ehlias Louis, Tav Streit, Mike Carlin and Carter Gregory Brian Nelson. Kelly Frame was just back in sixth and Olin Glenne was in seventh. Brian Keesler was third and John Bloomberg fourth in the J-III race. "I was especially pleased with the racing done by Kayleen Baltz, Tav Streit and Bristol Sorenson," said Coach Sue White. "Those athletes have progressively improved and have just been waiting to snag trophies all season. I was really happy hap-py about the group support and. U too! ParkWest skiers ready for JOs bj KURT KIDMAN Record staff writer The four members of the ParkWest Junior Ski team who are Junior Olympics-bound readied themselves for the JOs with a tough race last weekend at Snow King, Wyo. "The conditions were really treacherous," said Coach Tom Acker. "There were a lot of bumps and real deep ruts. The team skied very well, considering the conditions." condi-tions." Saturday's races at the International Interna-tional Super G Cup were canceled because of the conditions. The races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday ere both run on Sunday. It was the ParkWest racers' first chance to P' up Super G points, and accor-g accor-g to Acker, the race gave them valuable experience since they will in a Super Gat the JOs. Qualifying for the JOs will be 'yler Tebbs, Dan Tebbs, Jeremy is and Shannon Nobis. ParkWest's best bet at the Junior "'ympics has to be J-III (12- to "year-olds) racer Shannon. Last w m the JOs, she placed second all and won a giant slalom. Will we improve on her second place? "I hPso," she said. The J-Hi JOs will be held March at MtReba, Calif. 1 Would have to say that Shannon will place in the top three in all the events, if not win them all," Acker said. "She has the experience so she knows she can go and score well." At the Super G Cup Sunday, Shannon Shan-non again was the standout ParkWest racer, finishing with a second se-cond and fifth. The race was open to all junior skiers so Shannon was one of the youngest, if not the youngest skier in the race. The other J-III skier, Dan, placed 48th and 23rd in the two Super G's. However, he was the first J-III down the hill in the first race. "He actually raced very well against all the older guys," Acker said. Acker says that Dan is pretty much in the same category as Shannon Shan-non in the JOs. "He should place in the top four in all the events, and he's got a real chance of winning the downhill and the slalom," Acker said. Jeremy and Tyler, both 15-year-olds, will be skiing for the ParkWest Junior Ski Team at the J-II JOs at Mt. Bachelor, Ore. "Both Jeremy and Tyler have a chance in the downhill and Tyler should be real strong in the technical events, the slalom and the giant slalom," Acker explained. "Jeremy should be in the top three in the slalom but it's hard to predict other than that. He should definitely be m the top five in all events." Jeremy had an 18th-place finish in the Super G on Sunday. "I'm fairly confident we'll do well in the JOs," Acker said. "The kids are all real excited and they are all ready to go." Also competing for the ParkWest team in the International Super G Cup was Scott Black. The J-II skier earned a 25th in the second race on Sunday. r t r ? . 4-V" . Two of the racers who have a real chance at claiming JO gold are Jacob Doilney and C.J. Baltz. "I think I have a good chance to finish in the top 10 possibly, and the top five probably in the slalom and giant slalom," said Doilney, who will race in the J-II JOs at Mt. -Bachelor, Ore. "Maybe I'll win, it's I t 1 -'f v. C.J. Baltz hard to say. I'll just go out and try my best." Baltz will compete in the J-III JOs at Mt. Reba, Calif. He is a much improved im-proved skier because he isn't falling as much this year as he did in the past. "I'm seeing a sports psychologist and he's helped me a lot," Baltz explained. ex-plained. "I used to fall down a lot because my mind would just go blank. The psychologist, has helped Cammy Potter me to concentrate, to just clear my mind of everything else." Baltz is very confident going into the JOs. "I think I will do real well," he said. "I think I will win the slalom." Other skiers Dicius believes will do well in the JOs are Essie Doilney and Shannon Brunner in the J-II girls, Ali Salomon and Hilary Felton in the J-III girls and Carter.
