Show Page Record Thursday, February 20, 1986 Page B13 hAush Ski racers push on through slushy cross country course bvKl'KT KIDMAN Hecw d staff writer Park City's Ken McCarthy wrapped wrap-ped up the Wasatch Citizens' Series cross country men's title last weekend with a fifth at Mountain Dell Golf Course and a first at Jeremy Ranch. The two races were the fourth and fifth in the six-race series. A number of racers wrapped up their divisions, but there are a few divisions, such as the Women's Open, that won't be settled set-tled until the last race on March 2 at Wasatch Mountain State Park. McCarthy's fifth-place finish Saturday on a slushy Mountain Dell course can be attributed to the University of Utah. The university's cross country team didn't have a meet Saturday, so they competed at the Mountain Dell race. Aasmund Drivenes, a university skier, finished first followed by teammate Rolf Sordal in second and Erik Bauman took third. i did as well as I thought I would," said McCarthy after the race. "The snow was kind of slow and mushy, but it was good enough. Actually, the conditions were better than I expected." McCarthy's win Sunday assured him of first place overall. It will be left to Rob Landis, who is currently second, and Steve Erickson, currently cur-rently third, to battle for second place. The Utes women's team also made the trip to Mountain Dell and came away with the top placings. Kari Syrdalen finished first. Holly Anderson Ander-son second and Maria Yregard third. In what has been one of the more exciting contests of the year, Kathy McCarthy and Roxanne Toly wiil have to wait until the last race of the season to decide who will be the women's champion. McCarthy edged edg-ed Toly Saturday, finishing one place ahead of her in fifth. On Sunday at Jeremy Ranch, it was Toly's turn as she won the race. McCarthy slipped to third behind Mary Dern. who is third in the overall standings. One racer who did seal an overall championship is junior racer Wendy-Wagner. Wendy-Wagner. She won both races last week and has won all five of the Wasatch series this year. Andrea Homer will finish second in the under-14 division. In the Women's 14- to 18-year-old division, Ellen Seeley finished first at both races last weekend to assure her of the overall title. Jenny Erickson wrapped up the Women's 19-to-;54 division with her third and fourth first-place finishes last weekend. The fight in that division divi-sion will be for second place between Ann Page and Kay Cowen. As it stands now. Page has a four-point lead. In the Women's :?5-to-49 races, Ellen Gibson edged Debbie Wagner twice last week to assure her of the overall title. Wagner, who has been runnerup to Gibson three times this year, will win the silver medal. On the male side of the coin, although he didn't compete at Jeremy Rancy on Sunday, Shawn Brubaker claimed the 14-and-under division with a first at Mountain Dell.. The battle in the division now centers on second place where Greg Hanscom holds a 2-point point lead over Chris Jorgenson, who won Sunday's Sun-day's race. John Moreton Jr. won his first two races of the season last weekend, and along with a couple of second places earlier in the year, he has wrapped up the Men's 14-10-18 division. divi-sion. There are four skiers with a chance to win the Men's 19-to-29 division. divi-sion. Jeff Parker currently leads Unpack, Un-pack, but with good showings in the last race. Jeff Stuart, Lee Shea or Eric Smith all have a chance to win the overall title. Smith put himself in the competition by winning both races last week. Dan Gibson won both races last weekend in the Men's ;i()-to-:i9 division divi-sion and assured himself of the overall title. He has won all five races this year. Ray Groth and Tom N'oaker will fight for second place in the year's final race. A win for Dave Hanscom in the final race would tie him for the overall title with Dean Anderson in the Men's 40-49 division. Hanscom won the race Saturday at Mountain Dell, but Anderson got revenge Sunday Sun-day at Jeremy Ranch. The two have finished first and second in the last four races. Jock Glidden won Saturday's race and locked up the Men's over-50 division. divi-sion. He won the first four races of the season. Marv Melville will finish second in the division, and Pete Peterson, who won Sunday's race, will finish third.
