STATE, S.L.C. 1-800-662-7838 KPCW-92 FM, Park City's public radio station, has a sweetheart of a deal for its listeners during the week of Valentine's Day, when it hosts its third annual fund-raising auction. It is a chance for listeners to pick up on a few good deals and help support sup-port their community radio station. Holding an auction, instead of sponsoring the usual telethon-type fundraiser, was the brainchild of station development director Susan Finegan. The station first attempted it about 2 12 years ago when it threw in a few items for auction in its regular pledge drive. "The auction worked so well and was so much fun that we decided to gamble and drop the pledge drive altogether and strictly stick to an auction," said Blair Feulner, KPCW station manager. "Everybody wins in the auction. The merchants donating the goods get a good amount of promotion and the residents who buy the items get bargains." Last year, the auction raised $20,000 net for the station. This year, Feulner said, $30,000 in goods has been donated. The auction will be held from Feb. 12 to 14. It is a no-minimum-bid auction auc-tion with station volunteers manning the phones from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. KPCW increased the phone lines coming into the station from two to four for this event. Three items will be auctioned every hour. At the top of the hour, auction items for that hour will be declared. Immediately after the news, which should end at half-past every hour, the first item will be open for bidding, according to Feulner. Listeners will then have five minutes to bid on the item. It may seem that the first four to call on an item have an advantage, but Feulner said past auctions have proved that bidders will drop out when the price surpasses their :7a. The telephone line will be kept open so new bidders may join the auction. Although the station runs a regular pledge drive sometime in July or early August, this auction is particularly important. "It's become such a success that we now count on this fundraiser to cover nearly a quarter of the total cost to keep the station on the air each year,'' Feulner said. "Most public stations will be on the air 13 to 15 weeks per year rais ing money. We were determined to give people a break and only spend eight days a year on fundraisers. "We don't ask for money very often, but when we do, we need it," he added. Feulner said the response from the community has been tremendous tremen-dous this year, as everything from pizzas to jewelry to a condo in Puerto Puer-to Vallarta. Mexico, have been donated. The auction wraps up on Valentine's Valen-tine's Day with a play, a silent auction auc-tion and a dance. Participants can purchase a ticket for $10 that enables them to attend opening night of Park City Performances' Perfor-mances' "This Is the Place, Book II." and then attend a dance at the Rusty Nail Saloon featuring Joe Muscolino's Big Band and participate par-ticipate in the silent auction. Tickets for the auction and dance only are $5. Feulner said 15 to 18 items will be auctioned off the stage on the 14th. The auction will be called by Mike Scott, a well-known auctioneer in Utah. i ; r if.
