This seems like something that was only said back before the civil rights movement, but no, this was actually said in my Spanish class at high school just a few weeks ago. My Spanish teacher, Se'or Murphy, brought up speaking Spanish outside of class. Many people complained that they didn't did-n't have anybody to speak the language lan-guage to. Snr. Murphy advised speaking to the growing Latino population at our school... one thing led to another and we were discussing how many people know and speak with Latinos inside and outside of school. A lew said that they had Latino friends, most said that the Latinos stuck to themselves and that they just avoided the situation, and a small minority said that they were stealing jobs or dealing drugs, and that all the illegal immigrants shouldn't be here. this last group surprised and offended me. This notion that Latinos are a lazy ethnic group and that many Latinos deal drugs is not true. Perhaps I'm out of "the loop,' but I don't know any Latinos that deal drugs. In fact, most Latinos I know work harder than most middle-to upper-class Park Citvites could imagine. Most work two jobs, saving money for their family. One I know in particular partic-ular works four jobs, w hich equals roughly K5-5 hours per week. Park Citv is usually a fairly liberal town, at least by Utah standards, and it's always surprising when such bigoted views pop up. These views are a product of ignorance and are usually taught by parents. Parents, encouraging your children chil-dren to play and be friends with Latino and other non-Caucasian children is important. This lesson of not fearing and hence not hating hat-ing those different from yourself is one of the most important things your children could learn. In addition, children learn by example. Now, I know many people peo-ple who don't associate with Latinos because they are afraid of the language barrier. Speaking with them and becoming friends with them is not difficult to do, and I've found they usually know more English than you think. If they don't, don't be discouraged, even those that don't speak English can appreciate a kind gesture. ges-ture. Hopefully by doing this, the effects will trickle down into the school system. Currently, there is a wall isolating isolat-ing the Latino and Caucasian population pop-ulation at the high school. The Latinos stick to themselves, hanging hang-ing out between classes together, going to English as a Second Language classes together and sitting sit-ting together at assemblies. A few cracks in the wall do exist in the form of Latinos that speak English well and are accepted by the Caucasians at the school. These cracks are not enough. Doing so is not difficult. As the majority, the English-speaking population of the school must take the first steps. We must swallow our fear of doing something out of the norm and go out of our way to befriend Latinos. It's easy just to pass these people in the hall, consciously con-sciously looking straight ahead, for fear of making a mistake or becoming embarrassed. Don't worry about embarrassment, just give a simple 'hello', 'hey' or "how's it going?' as you would to any English-speaking person. We must each break out of our separate niches that we have carved for ourselves and get to know Latinos. How? Sit next to a by Justin Blake Park City High School Student Latino in one of your classes, speak with them, get to know them, help them when they need it, enjoy their company and enjoy the diversity of culture, we get so precious little of it in Park City. As the Latino population grows in the high school and Park City in general, the wall keeps growing more distinct, isolating two separate sepa-rate spheres of the population. This is how fear and hatred is bred. This simple day-to-day act of talking with and being friends with a Latino you would normally pass by is all that is needed to tear down this wall of isolation and insecurity. Just try it, you'll find it's easy and makes everybody's life more enjoyable. . The little animal's remaining wing, which Harris extended to show the class, most impressed Leslie Ashwood. "1 liked the wing because it was weird," said Ashwood. ,' . -t'other students responded with open' curiosity. Sami Wall, wanted to know, "would their wings grow back?" Harris wanted to show the students stu-dents that bats, normally thought of as frightening animals because of their obscurity or their association associ-ation with Halloween, are actually actual-ly living, breathing creatures just like more familiar animals. She also wanted reveal to students their integral role in some ecological eco-logical systems. When Harris asked, "What would happen if we didn't have any bats?" students responded, "We wouldn't have any rain forests! We wouldn't have any bananas!" Harris also lectured students on bat migratory routes and the kinds of bats that the students might see in Park City. While the students were allowed to touch the bat Harris brought to class, she also taught students that, ordinarily, touching a bat might not be safe. However, Harris stressed that it is important for kids' to get a physical sense for animals that they might not otherwise have. When she said that people often kill bats because they are afraid of them, the students responded with disappointment. "Children are so open-minded," she said, "if I can change their minds on bats, it will help bats in the future." McClelland said, "We'd studied stud-ied them in depth... but they saw them more as animals they love, like pets... they definitely gained respect for the bats - they had thought of them as creatures that don't exist in our personal world." After having touched the winged mammals, that has certainly cer-tainly changed.
