Ideally your approach shot should be safe, have enough hang time to give you the opportunity to close into the net, and be deep enough to limit your opponent's angles. The harder you hit the shot, the lower you have to aim over the net and the higher risk it becomes. Also, if your low approach is in, the ball will get to your opponent really quickly, rushing you on your first volley. A good approach shot, deep enough and with enough hang time, will enable you to have more control on your first volley. The more approach shots you make, the more put-away volley opportunities you will get. Key tips to hitting a good approach shot: 1. Work on placement: down the line in singles, cross court in doubles, dou-bles, ideally with the ball bounc ing at least a racket length inside the baseline and sideline. 2. Use a half back swing with a slightly longer follow through. This will help you to take the ball early and maintain balance on the highest risk shot: the first volley. vol-ley. 3. Aim two feet above the net. This will add depth to your stroke and buy you time to close into the net. 4. Never miss your approach shot. It is a set up shot with the goal of ending the point with a winning volley. 5. Keep the approach shot simple. sim-ple. Adding excessive topspin or underspin only serves to make the shot more risky.
