When a sixth child joined the group, the average weight of each child became 73 pounds. What was the weight of the sixth child? The answer is 78 pounds, which is a reasonably complicated algebra problem, especially for elementary school students. But some Park City kids have excelled in answering questions like this as part of the Math Olympiad competition, with four students scoring in the top 2 percent per-cent worldwide and nine scoring in the top 10 percent. Math Olympiad is a problem-solving problem-solving competition that roughly 135,000 fourth through eighth graders participated in worldwide this year. , "These are just not easy, you have to put together a lot of problem-solving strategies," said Chris Fournier, . the district Math Olympiad coordinator. "It's just a skill that's going to serve them well." Children participating in Math Olympiad take five of these questions ques-tions per month from November to March. The results are then sent in to Math Olympiad headquarters head-quarters in New York for grading. Volunteer parents supervise and coach kids in weekly practice sessions ses-sions to prepare for these questions. ques-tions. "I've got this army of great volunteers, vol-unteers, without them I couldn't run this thing," Fournier said. Parley's Park parent Kelly Thomas has volunteered with the school's Math Olympiad team for the last two years. She said when she started, the kids had difficulty even understanding the questions, and now they're winning awards. One of the roughly 20 kids on her team, Will Parry, correctly answered 24 out of the 25 problems prob-lems for the year. Math Olympians get no extra credit for their work. Thomas said she's "impressed that the kids would take on extra work for something that doesn't appear on their report cards." "They're doing it because they Your Real EstateTeatn...
